LUMBER WORKER Local 1-80 ~~ CREDIT ‘UNION | Prospects for the organiza- tion of a Credit Union in the Lake Cowichan area under the leadership of the TWA, Local 1-80, appealed to a large audi- ence in the Community Hall re- cently under the auspices of the sub-Local. : The aims and objects of the credit union movement were ex- plained by Financial Secretary Ed Linder, who was bombarded with questions, at the close of his remarks. The program was arranged in conformity with the District com- vention resolution calling for the organization of credit unions in every Local of the IWA. THREE CAMPS DEMAND BAN OF ERSATZ FOODS BAD NEWS FROM 1-417 It’s all bad news from Local 1- 417 during the past week. Nearly all the mills in the area have closed down due to the un- usually severe weather and snow conditions, A fire totally destroyed the Nicola Valley Sawmill, with the exception only of the boiler house and the planer mill, Plans for reconstruction have not yet been announced, and the resulting unemployment has caused considerable distress. Definite action to ban the use of butter, milk and egg substi- tutes at. Englewood Camps, Woss, “A” and Beach is de- manded in a petition now in circulation for signature by all employees, at these three camps. The deadline set is Feb. 10, at which time a special mass meeting will be held to consider further action unless favorable action is taken by the manage- ment meantime. Reports received from these camps indicate that the crews will not tolerate any longer the low- ering of the quality of food which has been noticeable since the new board rates ‘went into effect. A meeting held in Camp “A” Jan..22, attended by over 80 per- cent of the men in camp, heard reports on the recent District Convention and proceeded to step up organization activity. Since the Christmas shut-down a renewal of interest in IWA af- fairs has been most noticeable, with fifteen new members and eleven transfers. Two sets of fallers have also joined the IWA, and more have indicated their de- sire to join. Officers elected for the ensuing year are: Chairman, Wm. King, Vice-Chairman; Norman Swift, Secretary; Al Klassen, Head Shop Steward, Harry Beamer; Safety Committee, John Nelson, H. Kramer, F. Chaston, Bert McCoy, Bill Donald, Geo. Spanner. Grievance Committee, Jack Owen, Jack Mowat, Wm. Donald, Norman Swift, Geo. Williams, Al Klassen and Harry Beamer. Press Committee, Jack Owens. Steps were taken to process grievances regarding the unsani- tary condition of the toilets and wash rooms. A grievance taken up on behalf of Jack Lamarsh had secured satisfactory settle- ment. Camp “A” Committee have di- rected an enquiry to the B.C. Lumber Worker, asking why they do not read more frequent reports from other camps. They are es- pecially interested in action taken regarding margarine, milk pow- der, and powdered eggs.
