Workless Figures Soar Estimates of the numbers of unemployed in B.C. have now soared to over the 35,000 mark, with the peak not yet reached. This figure includes a large number of woodworkers thrown idle by the operations closing down for the winter. The most serious aspect of the situation is that every week hun- dreds more men are exhausting their benefits and are left to the mercy of charity, or struggling by on meagre savings. Last official figures showed a total of 24,000 unemployed, and local government offices, follow- ing their policy of suppressing by delay, will not release the cur- yent local figures. A figure of 50,- 000 unemployed is expected early in 1950. “Where are the public works projects to take care of depres- sion times?” ask the unem- ployed? “As far as I am con- cerned, this sure is depression, but apparently the government doesn’t know it.” IWA District officials are con- tinuing their fight against the Unemployment Insurance Com- mission officials for justice in in- dividual cases, and campaigning, too, for extension of benefits to men who are “exhausted”. BANQUET SET FOR JANUARY 6 Get ready for a big celebration on Jan. 6. That’s the date for the banquet for the delegates to the 13th an- nual District convention, when they gather in Nanaimo. Tickets are $2.50, and delegates are advised to get them early. District officials have now al- most completed the program for the convention. International President - Fad- ling will be there, supported by CIO Organization Director Gir- mer. B,G.’s Minister of Labor, John Cates, too will probably face the delegates with an address. Local officials are reminded that the fullest representation is desired for the convention.
