It is now well known that they were forced to take strike action because of the refusal of the man- agement to accept the majority award of a Conciliation Board for a modest inerease of 15 per= cent, mainly intended to benefit the majority of the employees on a weekly wage of $22.50 or less: It is not so well known that this determination to smash the, "THE UNION’S BUSINES retail clerks at the Army and Navy Department Store (Western) Ltd., at New Westminster, haye been on strike. The issues involved are issues that cannot be overlooked by the trade unionists of this province. Union, shown repeatedly by the management, represents the more general attempt to prevent organ- ization among all retail clerks. Powerful and wealthy interests engaged in merchandising, are exerting pressure in suport of the adamant stand taken by the Army and Navy management to smash the strike, and with it smash the beginning of organiza~ tion in retail establishments. IWA members will know what to do. Support the picket line when approached on the job for contributions, A dollar each pay- day will never be missed. It will show that the IWA members kmow the issues, and realize that this fight is their fight. IWA_members and their fam- ilies will also know that the best weapon to settle this ‘strike in favor of the Union is the refusal of the public to patronize retail stores which show such a vicious anti-labor policy.
