Local 1-357 Actions Of Anti-IWA Foreman Probed Officers of Local 1-357, IWA, New Westminster, were provoked to determined action through the grievance procedure at the Mo-| hawk Lumber Co. Ltd., upon ad- vice that an anti-union foreman had dismissed additional men be- cause of minor injuries sustained at work. Four cases were reported, in all of which the men had received notice of dismissal while under- going medical treatment, and who were absent from the job only because of injury. The same foreman was com- pelled to retract statements d ogatory to the Union, clearly in- dicating that one of the motives for discrimination had been his anti-IWA prejudice. His actions will now be intensively reviewed under the plant grievance pro- cedure. In the same plant, following these incidents, the crew refused to work Saturday morning when requested to do so. At Mohawk No. 1, four women employees were released as plans were made to move the plant. Reason given was lack of accom- modation for women in the new location. Action is now being taken to secure re-instatement with provision for proper accom- modation. Western Crown Better Employer and employee rela- tions have been steadily improv- ing at Western Crown Ltd., since the settlement of the strike. The owner has adhered to understand- ings reached during the prolonged pre-settlement conferences, and is giving effect to improvements in working conditions agreed upon. IWA members are appre- ciative of the more wholesome at- mosphere in the plant, morale is vastly improved as compared to that which preceded the strike. The number in attendance at the last class on Shop Stewards Duties, conducted by Lawrence Vandale, the Financial Secretary, jumped to a new high. The grow- ing interest in trade union edu- cational work among’the mem- bership has prompted the Execu- tive Board to plan regular edu- cational courses, in regard to which an early announcement will be made.
