Cc B.C. LUMBER WORKER OFFICIAL LIST OF IWA OPERATIONS Below is a list of IWA-certified logging and sawmill op- erations in the Coastal area for which wage negotiations Page Two MORE GAINS FOR LOGGING LOCAL Committees Organized, Check-off Signed In 38 Camps Visited By Loggers’ Navy Crews Bro. Leo Young reports: Progress made in building a solid IWA organization to service the, needs of the loggers in the Coast camps has been most satis- tory. From the Queen | Charlottes down to Squamish, working con- tacts have now been established in the majority of the camps, Jarge and small. Active camp safety and grievance committees have been set up all along the line with the assistance of our organizers. _ it’s a long, costly and difficult Job, ‘but is being pushed _vigor- ously with the aid of the District and International officers. Coast logging operations are widely scattered and often difficult to reach. But the job is being done and is now showing first class results. The IWA check-off in the camps will soon be the high- est on record. _A picture’ of this IWA opera- tion can best be shown by sum- marizing the entries in the log- books of the two boats tempor- arily chartered by Local 1-71, the “Lady Alice” and the “Elizabeth A”. During recent weeks Bros. Tom MacKenzie and Jim McEwan have been aboard the “Lady Al- ice”, and Bros Mike Sekora and Leo’ Young have manned the eizabeth A”, based at Alert ay. _The following camps have been visited, TWA committees organ- ized and members signed up on the check-off in all of them. ‘The “Lady Alice” Moloney Logging, Loughbor- ough Inlet; Booth Logging Co., Loughborough Inlet; Nelson Spencer Ltd. Fred Fieber reports: On a recent swing through all camps on the Queen Charlottes, IWA organization was found to be gaining ground rapidly mainly because of a realization of the importance of IWA nego- tiations for a new contract. ‘At Northern Pulpwood, Sand- spit, about 100 men are employed, 80 of whom are now on the WA check-off. Morgan’s Camp, about 85 men are working, and 70 of them are in the IWA. An active camp committee is functioning. At the Beattie Anchorage, Raft Camp, all but one of the 20 men are LWA. ‘A good meeting was held at Kelley Logging, Justkatla, and 30 new members signed up with the IWA. Thirty men signed up at Aero Camp of Kelley Logging, with in- eo pe aa SAM SPENCE 10 Years’ Service 1 HAVE BEEN ON THE PICKET LINE AROUND THE DAILY PROVINCE FOR 33 MONTHS “Until I was forced on the picket line by the Southam Co, in June, 1946, I had worked in the composing room of The Daily Province for 10 years. “{ contributed my fair share to the building of ‘The Province, and I worked there long before the Southams of Montreal moved into Vancouver with their millions and bought the paper. There never was any trouble until the Southams took over. : “Southams rewarded my lifetime of service with 32 months on the picket line, obtained a court injunction, sued members of my union for damages in the Supreme Court and aported, individuals from all over Canada to take my job. if “ay am_ still on the picket line with my fellow LT.U. printers. We will be there until the Southam Co. will abandon its union-wrecking policy and sit around the conference table in good faith.” 1 ASK YOUR SUPPORT creasing support in sight. Howe Sound A well-attended meeting of lumber workers in the Squamish district in the P.G,E. Hall was addressed by District Secretary George Mitchell on May 12. ‘The terms of the new proposed contract were discussed in detail, and the District Secretary’s ex- planation was accepted as com- pletely satisfactory. Unanimously those present expressed the de- termination to support the IWA negotiations, and plans for more complete organization in the area were sponsored with enthusiasm. International Board Member Tom MacKenzie addressed meet- ings at Roberts Creek on May 13, and at Sechelt on May 16. Re- ports from both meetings dis- close a growing support for the IWA and development of a 100 per cent organization on the Pen- insula. LOGGER SWIFT K.0.’s PRITCHETT The Press Committee, Camp A, Englewood reports: In our opinion in this camp a rank and file member, Bro. Swift got the decision in the recent de- bate with Harold Pritchett. We want to explode the false statement appearing in the WIUC rag that their shop steward army around here is growing, and that our IWA spokesman was booed and told to sit down by IWA members and shop stewards. Pritchett has little chance to hold a few members in support of his meal ticket unless he builds an organization on the truth. Swift received an ovation for his stand, and won’ the respect of the camp for his democratic prin- ciples. Both sides in the debate agreed that the lumber! barons could easily afford to split their prof- its with the lumber workers, and that the monopolies had their fangs bared to tear trade unions into shreds. Pritchett orated and shed crocodile tears about Dals- kog, the martyr, in Oakalla de- fending the funds of the lumber workers. He was unable to answer the points raised that without the at- tempted disruption, the lumber workers could decide in their own right how the funds could be used for their own purposes. Pritchett could not show how any advantages would be gained for the workers by separation from the parent labor- movement of the ccL. Swift made the point that Ca- nadian workers are unwilling. to be made the tool of the Com- munists as had happened the French coal miners. The boys in Camp A, Engle- wood have this advice to those who have been flirting with the WIUC organizers. Pause and think of your future social secur- ity before making a decision. Help to build a united and demo- cratic organization, which can be diplomatic until diplomacy fails, and can then put up a real fight. LOGGERS ESCAPE IN FOREST FIRE Total number of forest fires in the woods has already exceeded 128 this season. The dry weather has caused the outbreaks, which are six times more. numerous than last year. Many logging operations are working dawn to mid-day shifts to try and decrease the fire haz- ard. Outbreaks have been reported from many areas, but all have been kept under control. Three Interior loggers had narrow escapes at Marshall Gibbs Sawmill, near Fort St. John. They are Matt Scheck, Henry Cowper and Joe Fergu- son. They took refuge in a pool, crouching low in the water, but did not escape serious burns. Thrasher Sawmill, near Prince George has been destroyed by fire. are now being opened with Forest LOCAL 1-71, WA COMPANY Alice Lake Logging Co. Ltd. Alaska Pine Co. Ltd. B.C, Pulp & Paper Co, Ltd.
