TWO EX-IWA MEN FACE $12,000 FRAUD ALLEGATIONS Two former officers of IWA Local 1-80, will appear in Dunean Police Court on Monday, November 29, charged with stealing $5000 in bonds of IWA money and fraudulently con- verting to their own uses another $12,000. on Ao Owen G. Brown, and Fred Wilson, now officials of the so-called “WIUC”. The charges against them are: i. that they did unlawfully steal certain bonds, property of the members of IWA Local 1-80. (This refers to $5000 in bonds). 2. that having received monies ‘on ferms requiring that they ac- count for same as trustees to the members of the IWA, Local 1-80, they did fraudulently convert $12,000 to their own use. Preliminary Hearing Information was laid against Brown and Wilson by the IWA, and summonses were issued to them requiring them to appear in court at 10:30 a.m, on Monday. Test of Strength 24% per cent Revoke Best test of IWA strength is to be judged by the revoked check- offs. New Westminster Lo- cal 1-357, with a mem- bership of close on 5,300, has been officially notified of 125 revokations—less than 214 per cent. retroactive to September i. The offer brings with it a nine per cent increase for all 891% an hour. Locals 1-423, Kelowna, and 1-417, Kamloops, voted almost at once to accept the offer. Executive at Prince George met oe unanimously recommended acceptance to their member- ship. The new rate for common labor will now be 9714¢ — the highest ever paid for that category in Interior industries. Had it not been for the cowardly, irresponsible action of Dalskog and Pritchett in running out with their “WIUC” would certainly have been no less than nine-per-cent. District IWA officers are now consulting with local officers and membership in the Interior. They are recom- mending acceptance. The IWA must consolidate its position at this time, and be ready and prepared to teach the operators a proper lesson in 1949. Back Pay Coming For 91 Days Back pay for employees will run to 91 days. The settlement will make minor improvements in the hours of work clauses. Employees who have worked for 14 days or more, and are it within 30 days of.the signing of new agreement. The offer is contingent on agreement between the IWA and th Northern Interior Lumbermen’s Association, and the Interior Lumber Manufacturers’ Association by December 1. First reaction from IWA officials and workers in Prince George and Kamloops was—“Good work. We know you’ve been badly let down by the old leaders. They’ve been trying usuccessenlly to peddle a phoney strike line here on the 514- cent basis.” ‘Strike’ Conference Falls Flat Meantime, the “WIUC” held a “strike conference” at Cran- brook. They were quite confident that the operators could not be budged from the miserly 514-cent basis. How wrong they were. District and International officers have maintained the strongest possible line with the bosses who have been trying to press the advantage of dealing with “dual unionism”. - As soon as the initial flurry of the “run-out powder” taken by Dalskog, Pritchett, etc., passed, loyal IWA negotiators stepped into the picture, both with the Labor Relations Board and the operators. (See INTERIOR Page 3) A preliminary hearing will then be heard. Investigations are proceeding in Vancouver into the handling of the finances of the former B.C. Mlegal strike. That’s it. The company were told by the IWA, who have 46 of the 100 men in the operation, that they had better not negotiate with the alleged “camp committee” (“WIUC” in transpar- ent disguise), The IWA men, who voted 43-3 to return to work, haye so far respected the phoney picket line, because of their inborn decent trade union instincts. They know that the stoppage is merely an Labor Relations Board in Vic- toria are enquiring into the posi- tion, The IWA has consistenly re- fused to acknowledge the “strike” officially. Positive action will shortly be taken against the saboteurs, who are acting on the orders of their national chieftain, Pritchett, in an attempt to discredit the TWA and cause trouble throughout the in- dustry. Eight Cents Across. The Board; Nine Per Cent On Lower Rates;. Operators ‘Top Offer’ Upped 214c FTER tough, continuous tussles with operators, District officers of the IWA have finally squeezed from the Interior bosses, a wage offer of 8 cents an hour across the board, employees earning less than CCL CHIEF FORECASTS DOOM FOR ‘WIUC’ — AT CONROY “J am here to do all I can to hasten the inevitable end of the so-called “WIUC” headed by the renegades Pritchett and Dalskog.” In this forceful phrase, Pat Con- roy, secretary-treasurer of the Canadian Congress of Labor, ex- plained his current visit to B.C. to the B.C. LUMBER WORKER. Conroy, a miner who by his out- standing abilities surged to the key position in the CCL, forecast that the “WIUC” will destroy it- self within a comparatively short space of time. Won't Tolerate ‘WIUC’ “We cannot tolerate people in the organized labor movement in Can- ada who twist the purposes of trade unionism to conform with their own political adventurism. ‘I point to the leaders of this outcast group, who by their actions are trying to fulfil the pattern of the LPP, the satellite in Canada of the world Communist move- ment,” declared Conroy.
