Georgian Kiln: An application is now in for certification for the crew of this Kiln. Approximately 25 men are affected. Empire Box: Negotiations are proceeding and some of the prob- lems ironed out, The crew were getting a litle stirred up over some of the actions of the man- agement, who cut out the rest period and laid off several. Dominion Tar and Chemical Company: Certification has been applied for in this Creosote Plant which employs aout 50 men. B.C. Fir and Cedar: Negotia- tions on the wage scale have been turned over to the Stuart Re- Search by the Company. Alfred Quan To Organize Cannery Men The resignation of Brother Al- fred Quan, District Representa- tive of IWA, was announced last week by District Secretary Bert Melsness. He is leaving his pres- ent post to take up a new posi- tion as organizer for the United Fishermen & Allied Workers’ Alfred Quan Union. Brother Quan took over the duties of Brother Roy Mah, former IWA organizer, when he left to join the armed forces in the summer of 1944, During Bri ther Mah’s absence, Brother Quan assumed the role as Dis- trict Representative, whose du- ties in the main were to look after the interests of the Chi- nese Brothers in our Union. During his term of office, Bro- ther Quan took up a number of compensation cases and fought each one successfully. The resolution pointed out that such attacks on labor leaders could only be interpreted as part of a wide campaign on the part of reactionary elements throughout after the filing and investigat- ing’ of the members’ income tax returns. In addition, he was re- sponsible for all grievance cases pertaining to the Chinese Broth- ers as well as editing the Chi- nese edition of the B.C. Lumber Worker. In his new tasks Brother Quan will concentrate his efforts in or- ganizing the remaining unorgan- ized Chinese workers, who are estimated to be approximately be- tween 1,200 and’ 1,500, working in canneries scattered through- out Vancouver Island and along the West Coast. He will also help to establish a Chinese sub-local; interpret for the UFAWU chief- tains and look after all grievance cases. His vacancy will be filled by Brother Roy Mah, who was’ re- cently discharged from the army.
