(Plywood Union Paper, Oct. 30) The other day one of our members approached me and asked “What is the Union doing?” That is really a question that each and every member can very easily answer for himself. YOU, and YOU, and YOU are the UNION. It is you that makes the Union; the uniting together with cach other formulates the union of workers. The Union is not a pilot ship that steers us, wihout personal volition, through troubles and struggles and protects us from all the danger. THE UNION IS YOU. Now let’s look at that question again “What is Union doing?” really means “What am I doing?” Let us com- pare this organization to a bank; the more you put into it, the greater the interest and the more you get back. Put nothing in and reecive the same. Let’s repeat, “What am I doing?” Is my part large enough? Can I do more? We all can. Let’s solidify our posi- tion by all doing something for the Union, Anti-Union Firms Supported Canadian White Pine: This plant has again gone over the top in the Victory Loan. They point out that undertaking firms who have been, and still are, very anti- union are still getting the support of union people in times of be- reavement in the family. While this is not a very pleasant thing to talk about, the union officers feel that this mat- ter should be discussed in the family home, and a firm selected for this purpose, because death sometimes strikes suddenly. Union officers also point out that inasmuch as newspaper publicity is given to the death of persons, that these anti-union firms point gleefully to the fact that a union member—sometimes even a very active union member —has been buried by an anti-union firm. These things strengthen the hands and the efforts of these firms who have been bat- tling against union conditions for more than two years. Let each of us take steps to stop it. An arbitration board estab- lished by authority of the Min- ister of Labor vested in him by law, brought down a unanimous award favouring the IWA and re- commending that the company enter into negotiations for a col- lective agreement.
