As regards questions of do-
mestie policy, prominent among
the election issues are the polit-
ical and economic demands of
the Democratic League of Fin-
nish People, which consists of
the so-called “Group of Six” (led
by six members of the diet who,
\ during the war, were arrested
for anti-war activities), the
Communist Party, a number of
local organizations, the Social
Democratic Party, most of the
leaders of the Social Democratic
opposition and numerous demo-
eratically minded intellectuals.

the country, the democratic
forces have no premises in which

epponents, of course, have prem-
ises everywhere.
The old parties have other ad-
Yantages, too. They have hun-
dreds of newspapers, whereas
the supporters of the Demo-
eratic League of Finnish People
have only a few. The reaction-
aries have large election funds
at their disposal, whereas the
democrats have only small funds
eollected mainly from workers.
Moreover, the older parties in
the diet have had considerable
experience in electioneering with
ali the demagogie dodges (some
ef them have even had experi-
ence in faking election results.)
‘On the other hand, the old par-
ties are handicapped by their
former collaboration with the
Hitlerites. Over 30 of the princi-
pal and best known candidates
of these parties — Linkomies,
Tanner, Ramsey, Reinikka and
others—are so discredited as
close accomplices of the iHtler
bandits, that cither they were
compelled to abstain from stand-
ing for the election, or else their
own parties had to throw them,
on the scrap heap without wait-
_ ing for the verdict of the electors.
It will readily be understood
that if the reactionary elements
had succeeded in using the
eourse of the election campaign
to consolidate their positions,
_ this would have been fraught
with serious danger to the Fin-
nish people; for the reaction
_ thus encouraged would have at-
ted to maneuver the coun-

Women At War

This year is a test of our sincerity in world co-operation in
many ways. First, of course, comes the big test of whether the
American people really mean it when they say they are for an
international organization to keep the peace, both on the economic
and on the political front.

That test began with the introduction of the bills to ratify the |

Bretton Woods agreements for an international bank and an inter-
national fund to stimulate trade, build world prosperity and help

to eliminate the economic causes of war.

Then will come the campaign for ratification of the world
security agreement which will be completed at San Francisco. That
will be the biggest test of our international mindedness.

Intexnational agreements in themselves, however, won’t guar-
antee peace. Friendly relations between the peoples of the world,
internatiorfal confidence and good will are essential to make agree-
ments work.

Americans have two immediate opportunities to help build
that international friendship by sharing their food and clothing
with their allies ’ So far we in this country have suffered very
little in this war. Our homes have not been bombed, our possess-
ions have not been destroyed.

Conditions in the \lands of our allies and in the liberated nations
ery out to us for help. The United National Clothing Drive, which
will continue throughout April, will give us an opportunity to share
our clothes with other peoples in desperate need. The very least
wwe can do is to go through every closet and drawer and give to
the drive every wearable garment which we do not need ourselves.

An even bigger undertaking which we must face is to give
these people food. Millions of people in Europe today are slowly
starving.

It has been announced that we are cutting food shipments to
England from over 200,000,000 Ibs. in ¢he first quarter of this year
to 25,000,000 in the second. This is going to mean a further cut
in British rations and they are:already eating far less than we.

Today a British housewife is limited to about 24 cents worth
of meat per person per week—just about enough for ‘one meal.
Children are starving in Greece, in Yugoslavia, in Italy, in France,
Belgium and Holland.

. If we wanted to we could change our, diets enough to feed
those children and still have fully adequate nutrition for ourselves
and our children. ,

The women of this country ought to voice their feelings on
this. They ought to let the President and their Senators know
that they are willing to make sacrifices to save lives. -

Youbou Ladies Find
Men Can Cook

Since cur last report we have
enrolled one new member, the
only unmarried member in this
auxiliary and the youngest. She
is Sister Donna Mutch, daughter
of one of our charter members.

A joint Political Action Com-
mittee has been formed with the
sub-local here and they are wait-
ing now to have a speaker come
jup to outline the work so they
|will be able to get things roll-
jing.

* | tion of the sub-local and the aux-

iliary a library has been estab-
lished in Camp 6. The company
is co-operating in this respect too
as they have given the use of a
bunkhouse for the library.

We received invitations from
both Lake Cowichan and Court-
enay to attend their anniversary’
parties but were unable to be
lvepresented. However, we sent
|letters of congratulation to both
and wish to reiterate our wishes
for their continued success. We
also sent a letter of congratula-
tion to the new auxiliary recently
formed in Cranbrook.

A sick committee has been
elected to alleviate the duties: of]
| the secretary in seeing that com-
iforts are sent to the sick and
|injured.
| A Valentine gift was sent to
our adopted boy in the Solarium
and we are making arrange-
ments__to .remember him at
Easter. a

Prior to the labor lobby in Vic-
toria we sent telegrams to Pre-
mier John Hart and Mr. Sam
Guthrie, our MLA, urging their
support of the union check-off
and closed shop. We are pleased
|to report that over 40 letters
were sent from here in this re-
spect, @ big percentage being
from our own membership.

During the Red Cross Drive
two of our members co-operated
with members of the Happy Hour
Club here in soliciting subscrip-
tions to this worthy cause. Ap-
proximately $250 was subscribed.
Our auxiliary held a card party
in aid of the Red Cross and do-
nated the gross proceeds amount-
ing to $19.00. 4

We are continuing to send our
$10 monthly to the Overseas Cig-
arette Fund and are receiving
numerous grateful acknowledge-
ments from the , recipients of
cigarettes.

Cowichan Ladies ‘Help
Raise Red Cross’ Fund

LOCAL 30, LAKE COWICHAN

On March 6 a committee was
formed to canvass the district
for the Red Cross and through
their efforts $378.25 was. real-
ized. :

Delegates to the United Or-
ganizations report plans have .
been completed for a dance to
be held on April 7, the proceeds
to be used for the children’s
playground.

Our educational meeting for
March was held in the Commun-
ity Hall and open to the public.
Mr. Huggins of the Tuberculosis
Mobile X-ray Clinic was guest
speaker. As a result of this
meeting we decided to sponsor
an. X-ray survey of the residents
of the district. A committee
was elected to take charge of
the organizational and clerical
work. Credit is due this com-
mittee for their efforts as the
response was 100 per cent.

Delegates elected to attend
the District Council meetings
for one year were Mrs. Jane
Sumner, Mrs. Pearl Rendle and
Mrs.’ Margaret Svendsen.

Final arrangements were made
for our bazaar, which is being
held April 14 in the Community
Hall.
