At a joint night and day Shop Stewards’ meeting, representa- tives of all mills in that area made plans for a huge union meet- ing to be held in the Arenex, Queens Park, New Westminster, on Sunday, November 8, at 7:30 p.m., at which International Executive Board Member Nigel Morgan will install the charter and obligate the new Local officers who will be elected by the membership that night. The joint Shop Committees are? expecting some two thousand wood- workers and pointed out that en- trance to the meeting will be gained only by show of union card, Positions open for election are: President, two Vice-Presidents, Re- cording Secretary, Financial Secre- tary, Conductor, Guard, and three ‘Trustees. In addition, delegates will be elected to represent the Local on the District Council No. 1 of the International Woodworkers of Am- erica and the Vancouver Labor Council (CCL). In Police Court, Wednesday, Mag- istrate Mackenzie Matheson re- served decision on a motion by Wal- ter Owen, counsellor for Canadian Western Lumber Company (Fraser Mills) that the charge levelled against the company for refusing to meet a legally constituted bar- gaining committee be dismissed for lack of evidence. John Stanton, attorney for the International Woodworkers of Am~- erica, in rebuttal pointed out that the implications of the dismissal of this charge would mean any em- ployer in this province could get out of negotiating a collective bar- gaining agreement simply by say- ing, “We don’t think this or that was regular at your meeting.” Most of the court session was taken up with examination and cross-examination of Harold Prit- chett, District President of the In- ternational Woodworkers of Am- erica, who identified a letter re- ceived from Mr, Mackin, president of the company, on August 28, and Mr. Owen's letter of September 8, both of which, Mr. Stanton argued, were refusals to bargain and were sufficient grounds for the charge, The case was adjourned and de- cision reserved until Tuesday, No- vember 8. “Styles for Young Men and Men who Stay Young” N 301 West Hastings St. *& WEST Office an PAc. 0936 Ask for “GEORGE” TAXI * Cars Fully Insured — Reasonable Rates a4 d Stand: WEST HOTEL, 444 CARRALL ST.
