IMBER WORKER Bulletin Published by ~ BC, DISTRICT COUNCIL Woodworkers of America Managing Editor NIGEL MORGAN oom 504, Holden Bldg., Vancouver, B.O, Phone, PAcific 9727 “Make Payments to: “LW.A, B.C. D.C.” =—_ cond Front Is Essential For Victory The statement of Admiral Sir Roger Keyes, hero of the First World War, appearing in the daily papers this week, certainly lends support to and empha- sizes the importance of the popular de- mand being echoed throughout the world today for the immediate opening of a second front. Speaking in the British House of Commons on November 25 he is reported to have declared that if his men “had been allowed to act a year ago they might have electrfiied the world and altered the whole course of the war.” ‘The 69-year-old admiral, who was brought out of his retirement to train shock troops for invasion work on the European continent said, “The commandos (shock troops) were ready and eager to act a year ago” During his 15 months of experience as director of the Commandos, Sir Roger said he was “frustrated in every worth- while offensive action he tried to under- take.” Later he went on amongst other things to state that “Until the staff sys- tem is thoroughly overhauled, we shall always be too late in everything we undertake.” Statements from such a noted authority are clearly related to the ever-growing demand for the second front, for decisive action is long overdue. Firstly when the enemy's attention is distracted, then is the hour to. strike, even at risk, particularly when circum. "stances can never again be so favorable lpm Secondly, to refrain from spending all available effort to help an ally is to allow the enemy to defeat us piecemeal. There is no doubt there is still a tendency, which may prove fatal if not corrected immediately, to delay and find excuses, We cannot afford to half-help our ally. When will opposition to Nazi rule flare into general revolt? These questions are on every- one’s lips. The splendidid courage of Europe’s people in defying Nazi invaders and native quislings alike has stirred the sympathy of all Ca- nadians, but only a thin trickle of information seeps under the tight censor- ship imposed by the German authorities. Undoubtedly, the successful resistance offered by the Soviet people has been a potent factor in arousing and strengthening opposition to Nazi rule throughout occupied Europe, but the armies of occupation still exercise firm control, although with increasing difficulty. Opening of a second front in Europe, forcing relaxation of this con- trol, might well provide the opportunity for widespread revolt and strengthen the third, internal front against the Naizs. : What's happening in occupied Europe? Here's what has seeped through the censorship from the countries under Nazi domination: Earlier this year, the Nazis arrested Martin Anderson-Nexo, the great Danish author, and sent him to a concentration camp. But so great was the public outcry that the Gestapo was forced to offer Nexo con- ditions for his release and, when he re- jected their conditions, freed him uncon- ditionally, Some 200 labor, Communist and intellictual leaders of the Danish people are now held by the Gestapo in the Horse-Rod concentration camp, among them Hans Kirk, the young poet whose work is well known in the Scan- dinavian countries, Two of the three Communist members of parliament were arrested, but one, Alfred Jensen, escaped while being taken to the concentration camp. Two leading Social Democrats, H. P. Sorensen, editor of Social-Demo- kraten, and H. C. Hedtoft-Hansen, presi- dent of the Social-Democratic party, have been removed from their posts on orders of the Gestapo. In Austria, first to fall under the heel of the Nazi conquerors, official German announcements reveal that resistance to the Germans is AUSTRIA far from crushed. Facing certain execution if caught, Austrian anti-Nazis are per- sistently working to free their country. Here is an announcement that recently appeared in the Berliner Borsenzeitung: “The press bureau attached to the peo- ple’'s court announces: Edward Jaro- slavsky, aged 45, from Vienna, who was sentenced to death and permanent loss of honor on June 11, 1941, by the people's court for preparing to commit high treason ,and also Gregoff Haertal, aged ace SEA FOODS ARE GOOD FOR YOU «+. and you'll like them at THE “ONLY” FISH ‘THEY ARE ALWAYS FRESH! 20 East Hastings Street 100% UNION HOUSE DENMARK 49, from Tirschtiegel, and Vincenz Poida, aged 59, from Sperlingsdorf, who were sentenced by the people's court to death and permanent loss of honor for treason, were executed on Tuesday morning. Jaroslavsky, who had carried on sub- versive activity for some years, endeav- ored as a traitor to undermine the power of resistance of the German people in the war.” And in Czechoslovakia, which followed Austria under Nazi domination, sabotage in the factories during the past three months is esti- mated to have cost the Nazis equipment sufficient to have equipped several panzer divisions—divisions that would have been employed against the Red army on the eastern front. The extent of Czech opposition and sabotage is revealed by the fact that production fell by 33 per cent in July, 40 per cent in August. Transportation of supplies from Vienna to Dresden across Bohemia used to take three days. Now it has been so slowed down as a result of railway “accidents” that it often takes a month. Explosions have occurred in the Skoda and Nobel works and in other factories throughout Bohemia and Slovakia. Oil supplies have been set on fire — 30,000 gallons of oil are estimated to have been lost — and coal production has dropped. This sabotage extends even into the Su- deten areas, and mass executions of hostages and mass arrests have failed to halt it, Not all Hitler’s terror can destroy the spirit of such peoples.
