LUMBER WORKER November 27, 1940 $20,000 Restitution Won By Midwestern Wholesale Grocery and Fruit Company Workers A consent decree directing payment of approximately $20,000 in illegally with- held wages to some 750 employees of a large wholesale grocery and fruit com- pany has been signed in the U.S. District Court at Minneapolis by Judge Robert C. Bell, according to word received here to- day by Colonel Philip B, Fleming, Ad- ministrator of the Wage and Hour Div- ision, U.S. Department of Labor. Memphis Cotton Workers Win $4,000 MEMPHIS, Tennessee. — “Thirty-two Negro workers, employed by the Dixie Cotton Pickery Company, received a total of nearly $4,000 in back pay and rein- statement to their jobs,” stated Harry Koger, District IV President of the United Cannery, Agricultural, Packing and Allied Workers of America. “These workers were all threatened by the company about two months ago be- cause they would not sign a statement releasing the company from any obliga- tion to give them back pay, and most of them were discharged by the company because they refused to sign. $8,000 Up BALTIMORE.—An $8,000 annual pay boost and wage rates 15 cents an hour higher than any others paid locally were won by Local 28 of the CIO Marine and Shipbuilding Workers at the Hercules Co, here. The wage increases amount to 74% for cutters, 10 to 30% for top stitchers; 20% for lasters. Provi- sion is also made for further negotiation if the cost of living rises. Lodge 1231, will receive 2 7% per cent wage increase retroactive to last March if a supplementary conciliation report hande@ down last week is accepted. Lewis, who wired his appreciation to Bridges. The agreement to renew the contract” follows over a year of patient negotia-j tions on the part of the CIO union, during which the workers had to face constant attempts to break down their standards. Stubborn employer insistence on scrap- ping basic guarantees against speed-up and continued attempts to break down union hiring caused the prolonged delay in renewal. : Bridges’ announcement of the agree- ment credited the final victory to Lewis’ influence and aid.
