NEW WESTMINSTER, B.C.—Butcher
Workers and Meat Cutters’ union, local
94, will celebrate four years of union ac-
tivity, during which many concessions
for its members employed at Swfts (Can-
adian) plant have been gained, at the
annual banquet to be held in Legion
Hall, Begbie street, here on April 26, at
8 pm.

In the course of those four years the
union has dispensed with the employees
representation plan, a company union
set-up, which was.better known to the
workers as the assembly, has raised min-
imum wage rates from 35 cents an hour
to 50 cents; has won a full two weeks’
holiday with pay; collective bargaining
rights; full seniority rights; and elected
a safety committee to draw attention of
the company to defficient or unguarded
machinery .

In gaining full seniority rights, the
union ended a system whereby workers
were laid off and rehired at a lower
wage rate.

TORONTO, Ont—By a vote of 76-147,
Toronto District Trades and Labor Coun-
cil at its meeting here Thursday of 1ast
week decided to expel CIO unions from
the council,

VANCOUVER, B.C.—Application ror
a board of conciliation under the provin-
cial Industrial Conciliation and Arbitra-
tion Act was made this week by repre-
sentatives of the three divisons of Street
Railwaymen’s union of Vancouver, Vic-
toria and New Westminster following
a three-to-one referendum vote.

This move was made necessary when
the company refused to negotiate furtner
with the union’s advisory board for a
mew agreement unless demands for a 10
percent wage increase for conductors
and motormen and a 15 percent boost
for barmen and trackmen in the lower
brackets were dropped.

A full week's holiday with pay in pace
of the present 8day holiday is being
sought.

Inland Boatmen’s Union, CIO affiliate,
has been expelled from the Vancouver
‘Trades and Labor council, it was learned
‘Thursday. Ostensible ground for expul-
sion was that the union was three
months behind in per capita payments.
IBU officials, however, declared the
unon to be only two months behind.

DETROIT, Mich—The AFL auto
union’s last stronghold in Detroit has
swung over to the CIO and leaders of
the United Automobile Workers, CIO,
are revising upwards their already opti-
mistic predictions on the outcome of the
big General Motors Labor Board election
on April 17.

The last plant of consequence in De-
troit where the AFL union had bar-
gaining rights went soldly to the UAW-
CIO when the membership of the AFL
local voted to merge with the CIOlocal at
Graham-Paige.

Meanwhile, union and NLRB officials,
after checking General Motors employ-
tent lists, said that 136,000 workers—
rather than the previously estimated
125,000—will vote in the elections.

All the polls, to be held in 59 plants

in 11 states, will take place on April 17.

Lumber Firm’s
Profits Rise

Of considerable interest to woodwork-
ers, particularly at the Fraser Mills and
Comox Log operations of the Canadian
Western Lumber Co., is that firms recent
annual statement. Lumber sold by the
Company in 1939 amounted to 200,203,982
feet; an increase of just over 16 million
feet above the 1938 figure. With this
comparitively small increase in lumber
sales, operating profit for 1939 was more
than double that of the previous year.
But more impresive still is the reported
profit of the Company after depreciation
and taxes had ben deducted, but before
provision was made for sinking fund
interest and timber reserve depletions.
This amounted to approximately seventy
times the figure for 1938,

PULP INDUSTRY
BOOMING IN B.C.

‘The new operation planned by Bloedel,
Stewart and Welch at Port Alberni to
produce 135 tons of unbleached sulphite
pulp daily, will employ about 150 men
in the plant and an additional 125 men
in the woods. The entry of Bloedels in-
to this field will give B.C. five major
producing units in this industry, the
others being Powell River; Pacific
Mills at Ocean Falls; and the B.C. Pulp
and Paper Co. at Port Alice and Wood-
fibre,

According to the business editor of the
Vancouver Daily Province, the pulp and
paper industry is enjoying relative pros-
perity, Newsprint mills are operating
at a rate far in excess of Hastern Canada
mills and one plant is ‘on a seven-day
basis. B.C. Pulp and Paper Co. reports
orders far in excess of production, and
teh Westminster Paper Co. just issued
one of its best financial reports. The
Crown-Zellerbach Company's net rofit
for the 9 months ending January 31 st,
1940, was more than five and one-half
million dollars, the highest on record.
Pulp markets the world over have shown
marked improvement since the war.

DENVER, Col.—CIO affiliated mem-
bers of the Mine, Mill and Smelter Work-
ers’ Union this week at the Sunshine
Mining Co. at Wallace, Idaho, won a
Labor Board decision this week. The
order directs the Co. to pay one of the
largest back pay amounts in history, a
total of one million dollars to some 216
men who were fired for union activity.
The Co. must also cease coercion,
timidation and discontinue its company
union.
