THE B.C. LUMBER WORKER Loggers Stop Log Supplies For Bloedel’s Bellingham Sawmill BELLINGHAM, Wash.—All log supplies slated for the Bloedel-Dono- van sawmill operations in this city were chopped off last week as IWA loggers employed by the company struck work in the Bloedel logging operations. Adding strength to this move, IWA boom-men and rafters and mem- bers of the Inland Boatmen’s Union, CIO, also came to the assistance of Get Your Fall SUIT and TOPCOAT at The Hub now ... and enjoy real savings. Why? Because our new Fall lines were purchased months ago and prices are not affected by recent events. Here are a few examples: LLAMA AND CAMEL HAIR TOP- COATS—You will find the finest of these wools in these luxurious Topcoats. Reports from the following districts brought concrete proof that the IWA “means business” in its challenge to ‘open shop employers everywhere, ABERDEEN, WASR. — IWA Local 2521, plywood and veneer workers, and the Harbor Plywood Corporation, at- tached their names to a working agree- ment here last week, bringing to an end a fight on the part of the union for an agreement which has continued since 1937. The contract recognizes Local 2521 as the sole bargaining agency; guarantees the basic minimum wage of 62% cents an hour; and calls for the 40-hour week, eight-hour day. , . DULUTH, MINN. — Members of the IWA Midwest District Council have opened a campaign for a $10,000 “defense fund” here this week. While members do not anticipate any difficulty when their present contract expires in several operations next spring, the short log- gers in the Minnesota country believe in being prepared for any emergency. * Pad SEATTLE, WASH.—Reports reaching the international office of the TWA indi- cate that a majority of District Councils within the union are fully supporting the reelection of President Harold J. Pritchett and the other international officers as well as approving blanket endorsation of all proposed constitu- tional amendments. Latest District Councils to take such action were the Grays-Willipa Harbors Council, second biggest within the infernational, and the powerful Plywood and Veneer Work- ers Council. Meantime, as the log supply dwindled, IWA Local 46 pressed its appeal to the state Supreme Court against the injunc- tion granted against picketing. Position of the IWA in Bellingham was reported to be growing stronger daily, and a complete shutdown of the mill-was seen as certain as the com- uany's log stocks become depleted. IWA loggers in the Saxon camp and on the Olympic peninsula have refused to worl while the mill strike continues, Only weak spot in the union position, it was pointed out, resulted from the fact that the company could enlist the services of unorganized Canadian tug- boat men to move their logs. If this were done, however, the logs would have to be taken to Canadian waters, held 24 hours, then returned to the Bloe- del operations by another tug. The ex- Pense involved in such a procedure would be enormous, it was explained. Otherwise the union position was good, with all labor forces in the state rally- ing to oppose the vigilante actions of the company. eee ee ] READ THE WEEKLY [TIMBER WORKER Official LW.A.
