A building supplies dealer will carry the proper mortar, with in- structions for mixing it. A good mix is one sack of masonry cem- ent, three cubic feet of damp, loose mortar sand, and water. Mortar joints are three-eights of an inch thick, and excess mortar is carefully seraped off, and the joints “tooled” with a round tool especially made for the purpose. Based on Tennesse Williams suc- cessful stage play and photo- graphed in color, “Cat on a Hot Tin Roof” is a tense adult drama. The author’s name, the fame of the play, and the widely public- ized fact that Elizabeth Taylor played the role under the strain of her husband’s death, makes the picture an outstanding at- traction. Miss Taylor’s perform- ance is excellent. Basically the story is of family conflict, centering around a weak plantation owner, expecting to die of cancer, who is surrounded by greedy bickering relatives out to grab all they can get. The cast is top calibre. Paul Newman is outstanding as Miss Taylor’s alcoholic husband, Burl Ives gives a top performance as the wealthy southerner, as also does Judith Anderson as Ive's brow-beaten wife. They are well supported by Jack Cameron, Madeline Sherwood and others. This emotion-packed drama with its frank talk of life and sex is top entertainiimeint, a picture for sophisticated adults only. THE ROOTS OF HEAVEN, Oc- tober 15 and 16 Twentieth Century Fox went in- to the heart of primative French Equatoral Africa to film this real- istic unusual and intriguing jun- gle drama based on the prize win- ning novel by Roman Gary. The cast is top-flight including such performers as Errol Flynn, Trevor Howard, exotic French actress Juliette Greco, Orson Welles, Eddie Albert and Paul Lukas.
