Broadway, Vancouver Minister Finds The Press More Painful Than His Elbow Nursing a still-painful elbow, and a grudge against British Columbia’s press in general and the Vancouver Sun in particular, the province’s dyna- mic minister of highways paid a visit to The Tribune Nor was The Tribune spared, We were informed that our news. paper had been “hard” on his department. | By this time we were mentally hanging on to the ropes, but the storm had blown itself out. Hay- ing got his own beefs off his chest, the minister got down to our local problems as they concern his department, and we got along early Monday morning. The elbow was fractured re- cently in a fall, and although it would take more than that to keep Phil Gaglardi down, it is evident from the way he carefully adjusts himself in a chair, that it is bothering him a lot. But not néarly as much as a recent news story in the Sun about two workers on the new building for the Kamloops church of which Mr. Gaglardi is pastor. Since the two men were on the payroll of a sub-contractor to a; firm holding a government road building contract, the inference has attracted wide-spread atten- tion from opponents of Social Credit. Mr. Gaglardi’s answer to the unstated allegations have also been well publicized, but he once more went through his earlier statements in his best platform manner. Condensed version goes some- thing like this. The church is not “his” church, Mr. Gaglardi is only the pastor, and can be fired “tomorrow morning” . . . the men were on the payroll of a sub- contracting firm not a firm hold- ing a government contract . . .the church. was built by volunteer help, and if a firm wanted to do- nate the services of their em- Ployees that was up to them... the wife of the president of the firm in question is a member of the church congregation . . .Mr. Gaglardi defies “man or devil” to bring forward any evidence og told by newsmen that he is the “most approachable” minister in the government. as far as Mr. Gaglardi are con- cerned, just seem to indicate a concerted attempt on the part of the press to be as rough as pos- sible on him. fine in a conversational calm. As Mr. Gaglardi admitted before leaving, he is the type of person apt to blow high, wide and hana- some, but once the blow was over he carries no animosity. Controversial and colorful is our highways minister, and the emphasis is still on the latter. But the results, R. A. COURT, C.A. takes pleasure in announcing that T. G.
