The mill had been shut down since Friday night and it is thought an electrical short-circuit may have touched: off the blaze. Flames were first noticed at 11:45 p.m. by Jim Abe, who lives with his brothers in a house on i the mill property. He phoned in : the alarm, but the fire had al- ready gained a good hold and by the time firemen were at the scene the whole planer mill was ablaze. J The large mill, one of the most efficient in the district, was equipped with a planer that installed a year ago; a complete blower system and hogger. Pictured at the top is the fire Sunday night that caused an estimated $150,000 damage as it destroyed the planer mill of Lignum Ltd. Twisted and blackened machinery were all that remained by the time the fire was extinguished, Picture at the girders bottom was taken the morning following the fire. Weather assist Firemen used 1,600 feet of hose in their successful battle to pre- vent the flames from spreading to nearby green chain and lumber piles. They had an assist from the weather in the fight, the night being calm and the ground and nearby lumber well soaked from a drenching downpour in the afternoon. They stayed on the job until 3:30 a.m. Immediate result ot ine fire estern’ facilitie: ta night rent. the S Siugit mill to operate itt However, the has found forced to curtail production and the second firm sawmills, e Springhouse and Likely tions. Down in the corner at Third and Barnard, where the practice fire was, Fire Chief Sid Pigeon had to make a quick decision. Although he was sure that the alarm was a false one, jSespepened the truck and some of the men to the Royalite plant and left a small crew to dampen down the shacks. After making their check, the crew returned with the truck and the full-scale practice continued.
