-MONTREAL — Canada’s In-
dians are steadily being wiped
out as a cultural group, a prom-
iment Canadian Indian said last
week.

“Tt is genocide,” said Gilbert
Clarence  Monture, —_ former
Official of the federal mines de-
partmeat. “It is less brutal
and less certain than the gas
chambers, but it
just the same.”

Mr. Monture, a Six Nations
<Indian, spoke at a seminar of
the National Federation of Can-
adian University Students on
the influence of diverse cul-
tures im Canada’s national char-
acter.

He said an Indian who wants
to be a normal Canadian citizen
is foreed.to renounce his cul-
tural heritage, his rights and
Privileges as an Indian, and the
fellowship of his people.

Flying with the RCAF’s Golden
Hawks is a job that demands
finess and fitness. As one RCAF
medical officer put it, “an aero-
batic team requires perfect
health, both mental and physical.
They can be compared to a top
speed athletic team. Proper rest,
nutrition and attitude all have a
bearing on their ability and per-
formance.

These factors, coupled with
weeks of practice to smooth out
the rough spots in team flying,
are prerequisites for a champ-
ion display.

Formation patterns must be
rehearsed and flown until each
becomes as easy as “rolling off a

Those who took in the Pacific National Hxhibi-
tion last week were thrilled by the precision flying
of the RCAF’s famed Golden Hawks aerobatic team
as they staged five daily performances over the

each pilot watches only the air-
craft he is formating on. The
leader is the only one who calls
for the turn, the climb, the logp,
or any other intricate layout.

All manoeuvres are carried out
with the grace of a ballot dancer.
Once the half hour show begins
each pilot literally glues his eyes
to the jet he is following. Com-
plete familiarity with the flying
habits of the aircraft and its con-
trols are essential in this nerve
tingling occupation.

THREE HOURS DAILY

The Golden Hawks wear. a
half-G suit during their perform-
ances. This is an abbreviated
single pressure type suit which is
lighter and cooler than the full
“GQ” suit and allows more free-
dom and action. It meets all the
requirements necessary to with-

for about three hours. This is
done at speeds up to 420 mph
when carrying out aerobatics and
650 mph in solo field passes. Al

and double checked the

is made.

Average age of the pilots in the
colourful team is 26 years, but
their combined flying time totals
an impressive 17,000 jet hours.
In a Sabre jet this would take
the aerobatic team a distance
equal to six times to the moon.
It is expected that another
150,000 miles will have been
added to this total by September
11, when the tour commorating
the Golden Anniversary of Flight
and the RCAF’s 35th Birthday
terminates.

New engineer
takes over office

Herb F. Coupe, the new

district engineer here, took over
the office last week.

This is his first year workiag
for the government and also
his first stay in this part of the
country. For the last three
years he has worked with the
B.C. Power Commission in Vic-
toria and before that he resided
in Toronto.
