Firemen who responded to the alarm managed to keep the fire from spreading among nearby piles of lumber and quenched the blazing truck be- fore tanks on it exploded. The truck was then hauled out of range of the still burning shed. Frank Searle, president of Searle Carloading, states that about $200 worth of small equipment went up in the blaze, in addition to the 10,000 feet of lumber. John’s dog had started to chase a bear cub when the mother bear appeared and took after the dog. The dog ran back to his master, who was knocked down and mauled by bruin before the dog managed to draw the bear away. Weinard climbed part way up a tree and tied himself on before the bear returned and climbed after him, mauling him about the legs. Eventually the bear left and the ranger lost consciousness. When he revived he untied himself and managed to stagger to a logging road. About 6:30 p.m. he was found by a travel- ler on the road and taken to a nearby camp. From there he was driven to Savona and taken to Kamloops by ambulance. Designed for sightseeing off the beaten track, the 10-day rail-cruse is routed through the Pacific Northwest as far north as Fort St. John, B.C., and east to Edmonton, returning by way of Jasper Park. To travel a total of 4,500 miles, the special tour extends over six railroad lines, includ- ing Western Pacific, Great Nor- thern, Spokane, Portland and Seattle, Pacific Great Eastern, Canadian National and Northern, Alberta Railways. Wildlife film to highlight Alston program WHITE WILDERNESS, Special attraction, September 7, 8, 9 and 10 All the True-Life Adventure pictures thus far produced by Walt Disney have been highly entertaining and fascinating but none more so than “White Wild- erness” which cov a study of birds and animals in their free wild state in the Arctic regions. The first Cariboo Country Special in 1957 was also the first passenger train from the United States to operate over the PGE to Prince George. Last year the tour was extended over the Canadian National to Prince Rupert on the B.C. coast. This year the recently opened line of Pacific Great Eastern to Fort St. John and Dawson Creek in the Peace River region will be traversed. Scheduling of the special has been arranged so that the best scenery on the entire route will be seen by daylight. In addi- tion, the train will stop for several hours in Prince George, Jasper and other points and so overnight in Vancouver, B.C. and Edmonton, Alberta.
