Wednesday, August 26, 1959 SYLVIA BAKER'S LETTER HOME OME Denmark and Sweden capture fancy of We are back to camping again and are now at Helm. stadt, Germany. Before we left Berlin we crossed into the east- ern sector again, this time we went by a different route. I gained a different impres- jsion of the Russian Sector and am glad that we went back. The area we were in consisted mostly of apartments, not new ones, but at least they were all in one piece. The purpose of the second excursion jwas to see the Triptow, The Russian War Memorial park. The park - and memorials were magnifi- cent, it is something the Rus- sians can really be proud of. We then went to the Temple- hof airport in West Berlin and then downtown where I bought another six rolls of film. On the way from Berlin to Helm- stedt I was a little more obsery- ant and we passed a number of East Germans along the road with machine guns and on the overpasses above the autobahn were signes that read “Down with Adenauer” and “Remem- ber Korea, fight for freedom.” The first thing we noticed when we reached Helmstedt was that the pole across the road that acts as a barrier had been brok- en off recently. It looked as if someone had been in a great hurry and neglected to stop and show his visas and pass- port. This morning we drove to Wolfsburg hoping to be able to go through the Volkswagon plant and factory, but it has been closed down for holidays. The factory is absolutely huge and it would have been nice had we been able to go through it. We then drove to Hanover and as we are behind schedule went on to Belsen, the site of ‘@ concentration camp uring the war. What a place! There were no buildings standing as we had been led to believe, However we did see huge mounds of dirt with weeds growing over them and signs THE WILLIAMS LAKE TRIBUNE girls 1,000 bodies” fn one place the sign reaq 5,000! All in one stave! Apparently the place was so infected with dis- fase that they burned it down and now only the massive staves and monuments are to be seen. One of the monuments has been erected in memory of the 30,000 Jews that were ex- terminated there. It was rather an eerie place to walk through. We got up quite late this morning and had planned on going to Hamburg, but it is and one half months of wear and tear. However it was nice to have showers and toilets at our disposal even if the showers were ice cold Now to tell you a little of Copenhagen, you would love it, I know, as there is so much to do and see. At least we found our two days there were fully occupied and we are looking forward to another day there when we return from Norway and Sweden. I don’t know why they don’t build a bridge, you beginning to rain so we have|can see Sweden clearly from to change our plans, instead of| here. Spending the day in Hamburg] Once again back to Copen- We are going to continue to/hagen. Our first night was Copenhagen and see Hamburg On our way back. Will have to stop my letter now and help spent in Tivoli Gardens. They were lovely-the whole garden is lit up with colorful lights and with the dishes and packing. there are nice little walks BEAUTIFUL COPENHAGEN around the ponds. The largest pond was the nicest. On the Let's see, I left you in Ham- burg and I am in Copenhagen now, so I have a bit of catching up to do. From Hamburg we managed to get across the Danish border before darkness descended on us. It is a good thing we can’t read Danish because the sign said no camp- ing or parking. The next day was beautiful and we had a nice drive into Copenhagen. The country is lovely, it is re- latively flat, very fertile and the villages are neat and clean. It was a lot like driving through the Fraser Valley. To get to the city we had to take a ferry top of the water were dragon flies made of lights. Besides this there are open air theatres, restaurants, a lovely dance floor and an area devoted to games and rides. One of the restaurants was especially nice it was a huge pagoda and was outlined in lights. We had a Danish Smorgesbord here and Schnapps, a liquor, wine type of thing that is to be taken down in one gulp. SEE BREWERY Yesterday we toured the city and then went to the Carls- berg brewery. We heard so and then it was clear sailing.|much about the brewery from Copenhagen is simply wonder-| people we had met that we ful. I am putting it on my list/felt we couldn't miss it. The tour was very interesting and it is amazing the number of bot- tles of beer they produce in a minute. Later we were taken to a huge room where they had tables set out with beer and pop and told us to sample their products. Their beer is sup- posed to be tops, but since I am not a conniseur of beer it didn’t taste any different to me. From there we went down town for supper and then went It is much like still has it’s of~ favorites. Vienna in that it European charm. Denmark is so densely pop- ulated that we didn't have much of a chance of finding a camping spot so we had to re- sort to an organized camping ground, It is a little embarras- ing staying in organized cam everyone has the latest thing in camping equipment and it is usually new whereas our things that read, “Here lie buried are a little battered after three/to see the famous Jose eee and his Spanish ballet. PHONI KAHL PROPANE a wonderful show and 1 | thoroughly enjoyed every min- ute of it. The costumes were really beautiful. It is strange that during our three weeks in Spain we should miss seeing flamenco dancing and then when we reach Denmark we were able to see the world’s greatest perform. I like going to European shows, everything runs so smoothly. - If the show AUTOMATIC eight then the curtain goes uP right on the dot. There is no master of ceremonies, not even to make preliminary introduct- ions, but one act smoothly fol- lows another. WRONG SIDE OF ROAD Sweden—very similar to what we have seen of Denmark. 1 think I am going to like it a lot. Sweden is a land where the cars drive on the wrong side of the road, well, the left side the correct side. ys are going to find it hard driving for the first couple of days and have flatly refused to let us girls navigate, especially Marg and I who are the two who often nip off on side roads for extra trips that are not in our itinery. Along the road today we pas- sed a nearly completed house with huge wreaths made of pine boughs swinging merrily from the rafters. They must have the same custonf here as in Germany, When a roof is near- ly completed, wreaths or Christ mas trees are erected on top of the roof and the carpenters take the day off to celebrate the completion of *the house. think this is called the roofing ceremony. If it isn’t, it should be. It is a-good name, don't you think. While in the pagoda Bent introduced us to open- faced sandwiches and beer with schnapps. The sandwiches were WE BUY OLD BATTERIES C & S TIRE SERVICE LTD. delicious and they looked just as good as they tasted. The Danes are renowned for the sandwiches they make, there are 150 different kinds. From the gardens we went to a night club called the Gold Digger. It was done in Western theme with a dark log stained inter- ior, skins hanging from the walls and a real honest to good- ness cowboy singing in Danish! While in Helmstedt we met three South African boys and our topic of conversation was pasteries.° I don’t feel so bad as the two of them have spent thirty dollars on Danish past- ries in two weeks.
