nl & ‘THE WILLIAMS LAKE TRIBUNES Ne eee | SECOND FRONT Williams Lake, B.C., Wednesday, August 19, 1959 Plenty of action in Western film with Joel McCrea FORT MASSACRE, August 21 and 22 This is an absorbing, out-of- the-ordinary western. drama, handsomely embellished in colour. Reliable Joel McCrea, as always is ‘good, and is well Supported by Forrest Tucker and John Russell. McCrea is a strict commanding sergeant of a cavalry unit and takes it on dangerous trek, in which, follows Several vicious battles with Apache Indians. It is all rather grim with no comedy relief but there is plenty of action, excitement and sus- pense, GYPSY COLT, Special matinee August 22, 1:30 and 3 p.m. States’ first consul to Japan fol- ming the initial signing of the treaty promoted by Admiral Perry in 1856. The physical properties alone- the sheer beauty of the Orient captured in colour make the pro- duction a memorable one. Wayne as Townsend Harris is very competent but it is quite different from Wayne's usual two-fisted characterizations—Eiko Anda a beautiful Japanese act- ress provides the romantic touch and Sam Jorre puts in a praise- worthy performance as Wayne's interpreter. It is a credit to the producers that the feature based on a historical ineident is told in such a manner as to permit both act- ion and romance for overall appeal. North-west Telephone Com- pany’s vice-president and general manager, C. McLean, said in Van- couver this week that telephone engineers activated the new chain of radio relay stations at midnight August 13th to provide greatly improved long distance calling facilities to and from Prince George and the Cariboo. The new system connects with the B.C. Telephone Company’s microwave chain at Greenstone, just outside Kamlops, and makes its way northward via two new relay stations in the Cariboo situated on Timothy Mountain, in the Lac La Hache area, and Dragon Mountain, Mr. McLean said that the open- ing of the new microwave chain will eventually permit the com- pany to double the number of long distance circuits between Vancouver, Prince George and various Cariboo centres. Telephone conversations bound for Prince George are converted into microwaves and travel from Mountain via the eight relay points which make up the Van- couver-Kamloops network. From Greenstone, the microwaves are beamed northwards through the Timothy and Dragon erlay points Microwave brings service for Cariboo residents be- tween southern B.C. and Prince George were beamed through the Cariboo via a new microwave ra- better phone they travel the final leg of the journey to Prince George. Quesnel is linked to the new system from the Dragon Moun- tain terminal’ at the same time, microwave signals being beamed direct to a radio antenna on the roof of the Quesnel telephone office. By next year Williams Lake will also be directly connected to the new system through the Timothy Mountain radio site.
