Last year the board requested this post be filled in a resolution to the minister, Mr. Steacy replied that the department had been unable :0 obtain suitable personnel to fill this post and that, at the mom- ent the Quesnel and Kamloops offices would cover the area. He also maintained that the area was being covered satisfactorily lat the present time. At Saturday’s meeting the farmers decided to write Mr. Steacy re-aifirming last year’s resolution and expressing their disagreement with his reasons for not having filled the offic. Shark found near Kelowna just a hoax KELOWNA — For tourist- conscious Kelowna, the discov- ery of sharks in the placid blue waters of Lake Okanagan would spell disaster. That's why residents wore a puzzled frown when a man- eating hammerhead shark was found washed up on the beach recently. But they smelled something fishy when an expert said the hammerhead, a tropical fish, couldn't possibly survive in the cold waters of the Okanagan. Kelowna decided to check fur- ther. The obvious place was penticton, the city’s friendly rival 30 miles south. Larry Magge, president Penticton Junior Chamber of Comrserce, confessed to the hoax.! The Jaycees had the shark \flown in from Florida and “washed it up” on Kelowna’s beach. “A hamerhead gag is typical of a bunch. of meatheads,” commented a spokesman for Kelowna Jaycees, “but we're sure going to have to come up with something to top this.” of Americans visited Canada in fewer numbers in 1958 than they did in 1957 and reduced their spending by five percent, the expenditure being $309,000,000. @ when Always give A LONG VIGOROUS RING @ when calling the telephone operator ringing off In a magneto telephone system, it is important that you turn the crank vigorously and continuously for about 3 seconds at the beginning and end of each call. Dahl operates the J & E Store Admiral, Saskatchewan, in Glendale. The strange story of the origin of the name of in| Mr. Dahl, who used to be the great Babine Lake is told by John Barrett in the latest issue of the lively Wildlife Review. The 100-mile long Babine 4 Lake is located some 200 miles ..|Rorthwest of Prince George. It has been called Babine since the 4| days of the first French trappers who noted the Indian women were “‘Ubangi-lipped”, that is, their lips were artificially dis- tended by use of discs which were inserted when the girls were young. So the fur traders called the body of water Lac Babine — Lake of the Lippy People. The Babines did not carry the Practice as far as did the Uban- sis of Africa who made the lip treatment famous, but the lower _|lips of the women protruded to such an extent as to make them look grotesque. Sometimes the lip extended so far. that it drooped over the chin and ex- posed all the teeth. This strange custom origin- ated many years before the white man came. For centuries the Babines had been warred upon by both the Carriers and Chilcotins. Time after time the raiders came, pillaged and sack- ed the native villages, killed the men and carried off the women as slaves. The Babines decreased in numbers from thousands to a pitiful few until at last the headmen decided upon a strat- egy that was possibly as dras- tic and unique as any in his- tory. They decided to make their women so ugly that they would) be beyond the desire of any in-| vader. | And so this strange tribal | practice began. As each girl ap- proached womanhood she was compelled to begin wearing a dise of wood or bone between the lower lip and teetht. Each woman wore these discs — which were periodically enlarg- ed — until the medicine men ruled that she was ugly enough. One can imagine the horror and amazement of the first white fur-traders when they first sighted these women. The lippy women of the Babines have long since vanished of course, leav- ing just the name of a lake to remind us of this strange cus- tom.
