Speaking to the Williams Lake Board of Trade
banquet last Friday, MLA Bill Speare declared that
the Socred government is recognizing the need for
helping primary development.

“ Their investigations have re-
sulted in the government taking
a second look at the forestry
situation in the south Cariboo,”
he said. ‘The minister respon-
sible has assured me that the
forest situation will be investi-
gated thoroughly by an impar-
tial body.”

A local major problem is the

proposed bridge site for the
Fraser crossing, Mr. Speare
went on. He felt that the Mel-

drum Creek site for a crossing
was easily the best. Mr. Speare
apologized for not knowing the
fullest details about plans and
progress, but said that he did
know that surveys have been
made and that the Meldrum
Creek crossing would cost be-
tween $8 and $12 million and
was too costly as compared with
a new Sheep Creek crossing.

“The figures are out of all
proportion to the advantages to
be derived,” he told the meet-
ing. A crossing at Sheep Creek
would be at an agle, making
easier approaches and the steep
gradient would be eased.

TRENCH PLANS

opment for which the govern-
ment has received much critic-
ism and I would like to pass on
to you what the government
outlook is on this major work.

August hospital
vote goal

Estimates on the new hospital
for Williams Lake may be ap-
proved in time for a bylaw to be
presented in August, according
to directors of War Memorial
Hospital.

One knotty problem that has
now been resolved concerns the
need for a booster water system
in’ the new building. This
system was originally estimated
to cost $15,000, but following
a conference with engineers this
has been cut to $6,500.

Although this preliminary
work seems to be taking up a
lot of time, hospital directors
say that examination of similar
projects in the province show
that we are going along as
quickly as other districts have
done.

ENDORSES ARGUMENT

from the meeting, Mr. Speare
was told by Doug Stevenson tha
he would be unhappy about the
Fraser crossing being located at
Sheep Creek Hill. “I feel that
the high cost of the Meldrum
Creek site is including
building at both

bridge at a third rate crossing
which will be unsuitable not
only now but for generations to
come. I must remind the gov-
ernment that the road from
Williams Lake to Bella Coola
will be a major route in time
and the crossing should be put

visitors, the local Kiwanis Boys
and Girls Band will be in the
parade, and the word is now
that the once-popular Rube
Band has been reorganized.

And there will be plenty of
marching rythm displayed by a
group of 25 pretty drum major-
ettes from Kamloops who will
be up for the parade.

The parade is going to be
punctuated with beautiful gals.

Lawyers establish

Clinton practice

Establishment of a law office
at Clinton on a part-time basis
is being undertaken by local
lawyer David Moffett and
Thomas Meagher, who has his
own practice in Lillooet.

The Clinton firm will be
known as Meagher and Moffett
and the office will be open
Thursday and Friday of each
week. The two principals feel
that the new office will provide
a complete law service for the
south Cariboo. The Clinton prac-
tice will be on a trial basis and
if it proves successful a third
lawyer will be sought to open
the office full-time.

Mr. Moffett and Mr. Meagher
will continue to operate their
present practices as separate
identities from the Clinton part-
nership.
