Page 4 THE WILLIAMS LAKE TRIBUNE Wednesday, May 27, 1959 Sylvia Baker’s Letter Home Travellers see everything but bull fights in Spain Before I begin, happy birthday, Dad. going to send youa telegram, terribly expensive, eight dollar my thoughts were with you. We've just come from Madrid, where we had three terrific days. I wrote you about my first few hours in the city so will continue from there. While in Spain we had to eat a genuine Spanish meal and believe me, one was enough. They ‘simply drown things in olive oil. It’s a good thing you have wine to wash the food down. I must admit, though, that by our last day in Madrid, I was beginning to enjoy a little of the olive oil effect. I guess that in time you become accustomed to almost anything. We were awfully fortunate in Madrid. We ran into two English boys we had met pre- viously and they introduced us to three of their friends who work in the city. The fellows weren’t’ Spanish. One was Swiss, another Welsh and the third Irish. The bunch of us had a marvellous time together. The boys took us to a bar-like place where all the university students hang out. At the table next to ours there was a fellow with a guitar and he and his friends were singing Spanish songs. It was reall nice to sit there, sip wine and listen to the Music. Mom, you would really like the wine here: It is terri- fic). From the bar we wan- dered over the city streets and visited many places of interest. The following day two of the boys were kind enough to act as . our personal-guides and showed us Madrid. It is surprising the difference it makes when you have someone to show you around. We usually manage to see most of the main attractions on our own, but a personalized tour is far nicer. ON TO TOLEDO ' From Madrid we moved on to Toledo, where we spent an in- teresting day. Four of us girls ket when a fellow came up and asked if we would like to see El Greco’s house. We said “no,” we'd like to find a shopping area. He immediately became our guide and lead us through a maze of streets to a small store. On the way there we ran into two of his friends who joined our party. We had a great time, they were really funny. They spoke Spanish, French and a little English. We laughed all the way from the store to the car. They bought each of us a cookie and paid for a dozen|rid and Toledo we came through x I was but it would have been rs. Anyway, you know ———————___ oranges. They also took us to the factory where they worked to see how genuine Toledo jewellery is made. It was very interesting to see, but we dis- appointed them by not buying any souvenirs. I wish now that I had bought at least a bracelet, they were really lovely and are all done by hand. We were hoping to see a bull fight in Toledo, as we weren't in Madrid on Sunday, but unfor- tunately there wasn’t one in Toledo either. I guess our next hope is*Seville and should we miss it there, we will keep our fingers crossed for Barcelona. Had we been two weeks later arriving in Madrid, we would have been able to witness an 11- day fiesta with Spain’s top matadors in the bull ring. Before we left Madrid, we did get to see the bulls they use in the ring. It was just like going to the cattle sale in Wil- liams Lake, only most of them here are black. CAMPING OUT We have been unable to fre- quent youth hostels since our Portugal to Lisbon, another border crossed and the confusion of a new currency. I just seem to be getting the drift of one country’s money when we are off to another. In the eight weeks we have been travelling, I have used seven different cur- Tencies. PORTUGAL SPARKLES Porugal is very similar to Spain in many ways, but the people seem friendlier and the houses are in far better shape than the Spanish homes. Every- thing has a fresh coat of white- wash and seems to sparkle. The people here really find us fas- cinating and we have gone over in a big way. In both Spain and Portugal people have flocked around to stare at us. If we stopped in a small Spanish town for a few minutes the whole Population came to inspect us. The men would wander over to the car and the women would stop work and stand in door- ways or lean out of windows to get a better look at us. It was rather embarrassing at first, but now we are used to it. Even when we reached Lisbon we at- tracted people. I must admit that they are friendly stares. It is comical too, when we park the car on a main street. Before we know it, we have a crowd around. We have considered taking a collection, we could do quite well. I think that one of the main reasons we attract so much attention is because of the mixed company. I suppose they don’t often see three boys tray- elling with five girls. We also must look terribly arrival in Spain. We are a little early for their season, so we ave been camping out. We've] had some dandy camp sites. The| other night we stopped alongside a Spanish cemetery. You can’t be fussy. Our cooking has im-| proved greatly since we first set of. We can cook beautiful potatoes in our pressure cooker, our scrambled eggs are delicious, recommend to anyone. We even managed to cook a tempting pot of french fried potatoes. In no time at all we will be masters of the culinary arts. You needn't worry about my taking too few pictures, A roll hardly lasts me any time at all. is going to buy myself any, souvemrs, My pictures will™ve more than enough. I figure it will cost me over a hundred dollars for film by the time we reach London again. We will be in Gibraltar in a few days and I will buy enough film to last me until Germany. We will be taking a side trip from Gibraltar for about a week. We are planning on crossing to Morfoco and driving to Casa- blanca and Fez, back to Tangiers and over to Gibraltar again. I’m getting way ahead of myself. Back to where I’ve been and what I have done. From Mad- wealthy for we are forever hay- ing old women and kids poking their hands in the windows for money. They are really persist- ent too. Lisbon is a lovely ci It is on the Atlantic ocean and like Rome is built on seven hills. It is amazing how the old and new can exist in a city. There are some beautiful new buildings in the city, yet you see old was dying to take a picture of a garbage lady, but didnt’ have the heart, the women are so old and pitiful that I just couldn’t em- barrass them so I settled for a picture of a woman with a jug on her head. Another thing I oticed are all the young boys mn the streets. Apparently ni 0: ieer'cr=s isn’t compulsory, so a lot begin to work at an early age. Usually the ones you see are dressed in rags and have a job as a delivery boy of some kind. Since we missed the bull fights in Madrid and Toledp, I was hoping to see one in Portugal, but once again we are here at the wrong time of the week. I would have njoyed seeing a bull fight here, it is quite different to a Spanish fight. Here they don’t kill’the bull in the ring and the fighting is done atop a horse. I am sure I would like that far better than seeing the _-2 YC38 Sf A LONG VIGOROUS RING @ when calling the telephone operator @ when ringing off In a magneto telephone system, it is important that you turn the crank vigorously and continuously for about 3 seconds at the beginning and end of each call. Another odd sight is all the black arm bands worn during the mourning period. Even kids wear them. We had some terrifically hot weather lately and we have all been in shorts and tee-shirts, When we get out of the car we slip on skirts as the people re- sent slacks and shorts here. In one village a woman refused to speak to Kathleen because she had slacks on. The people here have a way of beating the heat. A lot of them carry umbrellas. WILLING HELPERS During our first half hour in Lisbon we were showered with Portuguese goodwill. We had a flat tire on the main street and over 18 men flocked around to offer their assistance. The boys stood back on just watched, as there was nothing else they could do. -There were too many trying to help without them getting in the way. The Portu- guese go to no end of trouble to help you out. Alan, Kathleen and I got on the wrong streetcar in Lisbon and a man who spoke a little English not only gave us instructions; but took the right streetcar with us, got off at our stop and showed us which street to walk along. So you can see why we think the Portuguese are tops for friendliness. Last night we were camped on the Atlantic Ocean a little south of Lisbon. We couldn't have had a nicer spot. We had miles of white sandy beach to jourselves and the ocean at our | back door. I’m not an authority |on beaches, but the boys all said it was the best surf they had seen since they left Australia. Marg, Kath and I were in stitches of laughter last night |when we were washing the jwishes. Our dishpan was the Atlantic Ocean and sand our |soap. We set the dishes behind Jus and would walk into the water and wash one plate at a | time. At one point all our dishes I guess I am too but our spaghetti—t wouldn’:|Women in rags collecting gar-| were washed away when a huge Tt is a|D@Se which they stuff in burlap | wave rolled onto the beach. We are on our way to the Spanish border and Seville. The country quite Tire Trouble ? C&S Tire Service is flat and the vegetation consists mostly of gum trees, fig and Olive trees. Apparently there are quite a few orange trees around here too, but I haven't seen an orange on a tree yet. Tm really looking forward to picking my first orange. A lot Of rice is grown here too. It is quite a sight to see over 20 Women bent over in a field of water doing whatever they do to rice. All you can see are their behinds sticking up in the air. I took a picture of them and they all tittered and wiggled around. The Portugeuse men are really something. I have never seen so many good looking men. They all have big black eyes. When you walk down the street they all throw you kisses, wink and stop and stare. It is fun, but rather embarrassing. Sylvia puts her head down, blushes and scurries on her way. Boy, is it ever getting hot. I don’t know how I will ever last in Morrocco where it is 120 de- grees. I am going to buy a big sun hat and glasses in Gibraltar. Time for my afternoon orange so will close for now. Ad correction The advertisement in last week's paper for B.C. Equip- ment Co. Ltd. included a print- ing error. The ad was based on a duty track roller fitted to the new TD-15 Crawler Trac- These track rollers need tors lubricating only every 1,000 hours. The ad read “100 hours."
