Wednesday, May 27, 1959 THE WILLIAS LAKE TRIBU Page 3 Winter sports resort planned for Kamloops KAMLOOPS—Plans for the establishment of what may be- come Canada’s foremost winter sports resort 24 miles northeast of Kamloops were announced here by an official of the Cana- dian Amateur Ski Association. Sam Warmington of Kim- berly announced the plans at a meeting of the Kiwanis Club. yesterday. He said location of the resort will be at Mount Todd, a 7,000- foot alpine peak located north ot the Thompson River between Kamloops and Chase. Promotion of the project is reported underway by a group of Kamloops businessmen. Mr. Warmington, speaking on behalf of the group, described Mount Todd as exceptional for ski conditions _ “ UNCOMPARABLE " | “There is no place to com- pare with it. Mount Todd would be five times more’ suitable than the present facilities at Kim- berly,”” he said. Plans originated due to lack of adequate snow conditions in Kamloops where skiing was be- coming increasingly popular as it was across the rest of the continent, Mr. Warmington went on. Surveyors went into Mount Todd in February and a group of potential investors began visiting the area this month. Mount Todd could provide ski facilities for more than 5,000 enthusasts. There would be scope for a nine-mile cross- country race as\well as an Olym- pic calibre downhill race. But for beginners, Mr. Warm- ington said, the mountain would provide ‘ideal condi- tions.” Snow conditions would last from November through April, “We hope and expect to have a ski lift operating by the fall,” the spokesman said. But he ad- ded accessability was a serious problem. A logging road now enables vehicles to travel within five miles of the proposed resort site. To commence operation a new road would have to be pushed through the remainder of the way. Mr. Warmington said that establishment of the resort would mean an influx of tour- ists into the area during the winter months “The Mount Todd resort would cater solely to skiers— there won't be a place like it in the west of Canada,” he said. While refusing to stipulate an exact sum of money required to establish the resort, Mr. War- mington indicated initial inves! ment would be in the region of $100,000. But he stressed this would be initial investment only. “The main concern of our group is to make good alpine skiing available for local people. Development for the great tour- ist potential would follow on after local needs have been sat- isfied,” he said. SCOTT'S SCRAP BOOK a WHat 1s ee x i ARING HARE WORLD fiat By R J.
