In 10 minutes the maid was at our door with coffee and rolls. This is really living, imagine, break- fast in bed! All this service is included with our bill. They automatically add 15 percent to your bill for service, so we are out to get our mone: worth. Back to when I phoned the desk for service—the fellow who was on duty spoke very little English and my Spanish is nil sb I had an awful time convers- ing with him. Finally he put a woman on the line who was able to understand me. We had a wonderful meal last night for only a dollar. I had a four- course meal plus white wine for this price. The eight of us went in on two bottles of wine for dinner and the total cost was only 35 cents. It’s amazing, isn’t it? We haven’t been able to drink the water here, but we don’t mind when the wine is so cheap. \ The Spanish eat very late. We ate at nine-thirty and when we arrived at the restaurant it was deserted. At 10:45 when we were leaving, people were ar- riving to eat. I don’t know how they last that long, but between six and eight they have tea and rolls for a snack. The enter- tainment begins very late. We had considered a live show but as it didn’t start until 11 and we were all very tired by then, we didn’t bother. The people must be worn out after staying up half the night. Even in a city the size of Madrid, everything closes up tight during siesta here, and it is no wonder.
