two mills

Last Wednesday the mill of ——
Dan Basaraba Sawmill Ltd. went
up in flames about 10:30 p.m.
The following morning at 6
lo’clock the Likely sawmill of
Lignum Ltd. was ablaze. Cause
of the fires has not been deter-
mined.

The Basaraba mill, 16 miles
from Williams Lake, had been
checked by the sawyer at 9
o'clock and again at 9:30 and
everything was found in crder.
About 10:30 the glow of the
fire was noticed from the camp
about a mile away by Twyla
Basaraba, daughter of the o
er. By the time the crews reach-
ed the mill site the entire struc-
ture was ablaze. Estimated
value of the mill was $85,000,
partially covered by insurance.

Also lost in the Basaraba fire
was about 30,000 feet of lumber.
Forklifts removed logs decked
near the mill to prevent further
spread of fire. The fire itself is
believed to have started in the
engine room.

At Likely, where the Lignum
mill went up about 6 a.m.
Thursday, officials are at a loss
for the reason of the fire. Mill
superintendent Wendell McDon-
ald first noticed the glare from
the camp and spread the alarm.
