Wednesday, July 16, 1958 Page 5 Changes in Rodeo standings follow close of Calgary show There have been some drastic changes in the standings for the Canadian Rodeo Championships. As the cowboys would put it, the Big one is over, the famed Calgary Stampede, with prize money to rival all rodeos, For a cowboy, winning the Calgary Stampede not only can be as important as becoming a C.P.A. champion, but the high points won at Calgary can play a major part in just who does come out as champion for the year. This could well be the case in the spectacular Brahma bull riding event. Gid Garstead of Veterar had a small lead one week ago, and by sweeping the event at Calgary has now rolled up 2933 points, far ahead of Lawrence Hutchison of Coch- rane who holds second place with 980. Another Cochrane rid- er, Norman Edge holds third spot with 705. Wilf Girletz of Youngstown has taken over 4th Place at 618 with Leo Brown of Czar fifth at 477. However, the Calgary Stam- pede left all other major events still a close race. In-the saddle brone riding, it provided the opportunity for the defending champion Winston Bruce to move into the lead for the first time this year. Winston, who now makes his home at Calgary was the top Canadian moving up to 1231 points, a slim margin ahead of Rob Robinson of Coch- rane at 1121, and George Myron of Viking at 1195. Ellie Lewis of Penticton holds 4th place with 643 and Dick Nash of Black Diamond is crowding close in 5th place at 657. In the other riding event, the bareback brone, Ellie Lewis is still the top. man, but Calgary points saw the gap closed with Brian Butterfield of Ponoka second with 800. Walt Shuck- burg of Stettler has taken over third place at 607 and Leo Brown of Czar managed to stay in fourth place at 591. Jim Groves of Brooks has moyed in- to the top five for the first time at 450, dropping Bob Brown of Nanton back to 6th with 439. Bud Butterfield of Ponoka needed but little success at Cal- gary to stay in front in the wild steer wrestling, with his score now 1519 points, but Bud Van Cleave of Taber captured the event to move right into second place with 1371 points, and John Hawk of Gwynne also scored heavily taking over third place with 1702, ending the Butter- field brothers démination of the event, Brian is now in 4th place with 791 and Tom holds 5th spot with 646, only a few not- ches ahead of Wilf Girletz who has moved into a contending Position with 612. e The closest and keenest com- Petition, as it was prior to Cal- gary, is in the calf roping. Bud }Gleave has pushed his score up to 949, barely three dollars to earnings ahead of Bill Collins of Stettler, but the roping could still be anyones race, for Brian Cochlan of Stavely has 6 Cliff Vandergrift of Drayton Val- ley 513 and Brian Butterfield 496. Gordon Hall of Taber is crowding close with 494 and Alex Laye of Sounding Lake has 488. Calgary Stampede were wild and wooly, but with capable driving, accidents always seemed about to happen, but never did. And the chuck wagon men can prom- ise thrilling racing for the bal- ance of the season for it appears to be a nip-and-tuck race for the championship. Bill Green- wood, driving the Merle Ander- son outfit from Carbon won the Calgary Stampede top money and now has 3620 points, but hardly a comfortable lead over the defending champion, Dale Flett driving the Peter Bawden entry, with 3489 points. Taking third at Calgary and standing third for the year, Lloyd Nelson of High River has 2869. Racing strongly all during the year to capture fourth at Calgary and also to drop to 4th in the standings is the far north- ern outfit, Ralph Vigen of GrandePrairie, now with 2615. Tom Dorchester of Ma-Me-o not only ran 5th at Calgary but also holds the same spot in the year's standings with 1929 points scored for the Jack Sheckter outfit of Edmonton. In 6th place is the Commodore Allen outfit of Vulcan, driven at.Calgary by L. O. Nelson, after an injury to: Hank: Willard at High River races, now with 1816 points. All of these top six could be considered in contention, but it will require consistent placing of top, or near top money at the remaining races, to become a winner. a The standings should assure thrilling races at the chuck wagon races at Grande Prairie, Lethbridge, The North Peace, Wetaskiwin, Red Deer, Camrose, Fort St. John, Dawson Creek and other races to come. There will be at least ten thousand dollars in purses still to be won at these races. YOU FACES AMES x SCHOOL OF MEMORY Schoal of Memory 4350 Fraser Street, EM Correspondence ! STOP FORGETTING !
