A rather bad break hit prices in the midwest as the veek opened, but there was a zood recovery when receipts lropped to a very low level. Far western markets failed to recover after the initial break ‘his week, and most quotations ire ending lower. First signs of weekness showed up late last week, then continued this week on moderate numbers. Demand stayed light at all times and, with very narrow buying orders, it was rather difficult to get offerings cleaned up. The drop in buiying came as no great surprise to the majority of members in the trade, for this is Holy Week and generally a time when red meat buying is at a very low ebb. There are indications that a fairly large crop of cattle are nearing market condition in the midwest, and larger runs are ex- pected to hit the markets in the near future, A lot of cattle that were bought late this winter, however, are scheduled for spring grass, which may. temper the situation somewhat. There is a different situation in the far west, Numbers of cattle on feed are down sharply from a year earlier and, as yet, (there is no sign of movement ee From the Office of the C.C.A. to, in_some instances, substan tially higher than a week Any gains made,~however, due almost entirely to the short supply, as buying for States shipment was r Notable price changes gains of 50c¢ to 1.00 on steers. beifers and goods cows at Win- nipeg, and to 50e on tor quality steers at Edmonton Scattered gains and losses were noted elsewhere hut these wer generally of a minor nature.
