“the Cowboy's Protective Associa- Mining | Industry Called To Task VICTORIA—The British Columbia mining industry was called to task recently for their failure to live up to their public relations responsibilities to the B.C. community. Prof. Harry Warren, Professor of Geology at U.B.C., speaking before the 11th Natural Resources Conference, declared that “two companies, one. of whom paid out over $10,000,000, and the other over $20,000,000 in dividends, gave directly not one penny to further basic research or educa- tion.” Z| He declared that if the mining companies complain because they feel provincial legislation rules against them, it is most likely their own fault through their-failure to tell the story of their contribution to B.C.’s way of life. “Tt is probably fair to say that no primary industry has done 2 finer job of improving its tech- nical efficiency than has the mining industry. -In this respect, B.C. can hold its head shigh before both the rest of Canada and the world in general. How- ever, in the job of making known its worth to the community and explaining its peculiar problems, even its best friends could hardly claim that it had been moderately successful in B.C.,” Dr. Warren declared. There were good prospects for a lucrative future in the industry providing the job of educating the public as to the peculiar characteristics of this industry was properly done, Dr. Warren said. The “ peculiar character- isties "— exhaustibility, unpre- dictability and extreme localiza- tion—make it essential that the industry be treated on its own Merits and not merely as an inexhaustible source of booty for the tax collector, he added.
