THE TRIBUNE, WILLIAMS LAKE, BG. Wednesday, January 25, [| EDITORIALS © The Indefatigable Editor S E note from news reports that Margaret Murray, indefatigable and indestructibie editor of the Alaska Highway News at Fort St. John, is shucking her editorial responsibilities this year. These reports, including a biographical sketch in last week's issue of Time magazine, started us thinking about “ Ma.” Many of our readers know Margaret Murray Since he came to the Cariboo e--ore ule urn OF the century. In her impatience to get her tumbling thoughts down on paper, this 69-year-old gra: dmother is apt to produce “copy” that is at timesgrammatically of unsound structure, but alway su é across the facts buttressed wit iter’s o.ivious. Once you are a Murray fan, as we are, you look-tor such descriptive phrases as this one:that appeared in a story last week calling for support of the Board of Trade: “ Politics. will ruin it faster than a snow- ball will leave-a red hot stove:” In writing, as in Speaking, Maggie has a homespun, earthy approach that endears her to her friends to about the same degree that it annoys her detractors. But whether you agree with her approach or not, you must concede that Maggie has done a tremendou: Selling job for the Peace River country, both to its residents and the outside world. To sell any com- modity, including a district, you must believe in what you are peddling, and Maggie believes. She is utterly convinced she’s in the chosen area of the chosen province of the chosen country of the world. Although she leaves her editorial desk this year, we hope we'll continue to see the familiar “mlm” trademark on her feature stories in the News for years to come, Winter — It's Wonderful Waster records are going by the board in the - Central Cariboo this winter, as January nears its end with still no indication of the mercury dropping below zero. While we are experiencing all the joys of an “open winter,”-we can sympathize with our coast cousins who are sloshing around in heavy downpours , (of rain, no Aloubt happy in their “ every: en play- ground.” Hyen heavy snowfalls that hast fe ek piled up to a reported 16 inches at Quesnel, have y-passed us in this part of the Cariboo. No doubt, next winter we’ll be looking at read- ings of 30 below and wishing we could turn back the calendar, but while this unusual season is with us, we'll enjoy it to the utmost. Lost —A Boy By Jane Dale E wasn’t lost in the woods one day; nor by kid- nappers stolen away. He wasn’t taken by some dreadful ill—in fact, he’s alive and with us still! Ag ne a t “Too busy!” was Dad to listen awhile, or take him walking a long merry mile. “Too busy!” to know a boy’s restless heart, so he lost his son—now they’re miles apart.” “Too busy! ” was Mom, with her bridge and her cares, to take time to listen to a small boy’s prayers. “Too busy!” to cherish a boy’s urgent need of her guiding hand—so she lost him, indeed. ‘Too busy!” the church with its words to the wise; it couldn't see life through a young lad’s eyes: it put greater store by its patrons grey, so gave little heed as a boy slipped away! And so he was lost—he is your boy and mine, Lost—when he could have been made something fine. “Too busy!” How sad—as the quickly fled.
