First move in District building program came this week with the calling of tenders for additions to Skyline School in town and the 100 Mile House elementary school. Next major step will be a call for tenders for construction of a three-room school at Smedley- ville. Department of Education plans are being used for this project and‘it is hoped that the tender call will be made about August 27. Reason for this is that the portable units actually belong to these three centres. Plan is to erect them in town for a year and then dismantle them and move them to their permanent sites. In the meantime, the three communities would get by with’ their present buildings. If the plan is approved, the units could he in use by the end of September. There are presently seven classrooms on shift at the town school. Use of the portables would reduce this number to three since the temporary space at Columbus Hall will still be in use. SHIFTS In theory, the new Smedley- vill school, plus the portable units, would end the shift system. Survey work is now being car- ried out at 100 Mile House for the elementary school addition and the high school. Work on the latter building will not commence until next spring. The same applies at 150 Mile House, where the board is look- ing for a larger site. The addition to the Horsefly school is now under construc- tion. Work is being carried out by the board’s own maintenance crew. The new school at Likely should be completed within the first or second week in Septem- ber. Within six weeks.a school and teacherage at Riske Creek West and a teacherage at Riske Creek East should be completed. Negotiations are now under- way to purchase a site for the proposed school at Black Creek. A new school that wasn’t an- ticipated, will be erected at Forest Lake, which is eight miles off the highway from 159 Mile. Ruel Sawmill here will erect the frame and roof of the {school building and the board will finish the structure. There will be 16 children enrolled. Expect 10 Per Cent Increase In High School Enrolment A 10 per cent increase is anti- cipated in Williams Lake High School enrolment figures by principal Tom Beames, In June, the school population figure was 360. There are now 384 tentatively registered and it is expected that this figure will be close to 400 by the time the new term is underway. Time-table for classes will probably not be made up until the first week of the term since teacher appointments are still being made from day to day. ‘The high school will start the term again on the §$ a.m. schedule. Although the school is not on shift, it is necessary to start at the earlier time because of the school -bussing problem: School staff will hold an all- day conference September 3, and the following day pupils will register.” Registration is neces- sary for both those students who have been attending ‘the school as well as newcomers. Fees will be paid at registration time and will amount to $5.50 for students in grades seven to nine and $6 for those in grades 10 to 12. It is expected that regular classes will be underway by September 5.
