2 .., THE TRIBUNE, WILLIAMS LAKE, Be pee She ae [ EDITORIALS System Might Confuse {= long-overdue plan of street naming and house numbering in Williams Lake moved a little closer to becoming a reality last week when the Board of Trade presented_a map to the commission showing the disposition of numbers for every lot in town. Before these numbers are allocated to the property owners however, the commissioners must complete their part of the plan by erecting the street corner posts bearing the names of the streets and avenues. Getting back to the numbering plan, there is one aspect of it that we believe could, in itself, lead to some confusion. Seeking to accommodate any possible future needs, the committee in charge of the numbering has allocated four numbers to each lot in the town. In commercial areas Particularly, the growth of any town is followed by a breaking up of normal sized lots into plots of ground that just has room on it for the business houses located there. When this happens where a normal numbering system is in effect, we find buildings labelled. 234% or 284A. The policy advanced of allowing four numbers to each lot would certainly avoid this sort of eventuality, and we are in agreement with the theory within the commercial zones of the town. But we fail to see the necessity of this course of-action being followed in the residential or single-dwelling zones. In looking for a residence by number, people are used to assuming that 431 is followed by 433 on one side of the street, unless there is a vacant lot in be- tween. We believe the fact that 431 will be followed by 439 on the streets of Williams Lake will be un- necessarily confusing the problem, Which number is allocated to the present owner of a house on any town lot? Take the man whose lot has numbers 431, 433, 435, 487. Presumably there would have to be some order in this allocating, such as each house now being given the first in the ‘series. But what if the house is located tight against the side of the lot away from the 400-block corner? If the lot was ever sub-divided it is not likely he would move the-building, so it should be given either the number 435 or 437. For years to come, the present single dwelling zones will remain as such, and we think it would be a wiser plan to have house 431 followed by house 433. We need a numbering plan badly in Williams Lake, and the committee of the Board of Trade that has spent a great deal of time on the project are to be complimented on their. acceptan of civic responsi- bility. Our object in criticizing a part of the plan is done with the thought that all of the aspects should be considered, Get The P.G.E. Story Across OTING that the Pacific Great Eastern Railway is N receiving nothing but “ bad press’ in the news- Papers these days, the Editor of the Lillooet News suggests the time has come for the government- owned line to do something about mending fences in a public relations way. We are quite in agreement with the thought, in fact it is one we expressed several years ago. Basic purpose of a public relations staff is not, as is sometimes supposed, to spend their employer’s money in promoting the gentlemen of the press by throwing large parties, or,"to give another viewpoint, of getting as much free advertising into the news columns of the daily and weekly press as possible, The purpose of such a staff is to get the story be- hind the operations of the company across to the public. A wide-awake public relations department will ensure that the company’s side of a noteworthy event is given concisely and quickly. It provides a source of information that, in the case of the P.G.E., is prae- tically non-existent today. The railway company at present employs the services of one public relations firm on a consultant basis, but this is proving little better than the pre- vious hit-and-miss methods of getting the railroad’s story across. The establishment of a public relations depart- ment would prove a worthwhile investment for the Py SCHEDULE Cabal DAILY SERVICE SOUTHBOUND—Leaves Prince George at 7 a.m. NORTHBOUND—Leaves Nth.
