Stage Coach Run
To Be Made From
Barkerville In ‘58

VICTORIA — Thundering
hooves and the rattle of an old-
time stage coach, with escorting
outriders and the inevitable
“bad men” of the hills adding
to the colorful din, will sound
through B,C. next year.

It will be a re-liying of the
early frontier days in B.C. when
this type of transportation was
the lifeline between large
centres and distant points.

Lawrie Wallace, A of
the B.C. G1 Cc

QUESNEL — J. J.
has spent the past 43

ber 9 by-election. Mr.

Ceal Tingley, recently elected
president of the Cariboo Conser-
vative Association, proposed the
nomination. He stressed Mr.
Roddis’ lengthy residence here
and the active part he has played
in community affairs. The

whose ie was a stage
eoach driver on Vancouver
Island in 1871, when B.C.
entered confederation, said:

“The story of early transpor-
tation in this province is one of
the most exciting chapters in our
history. With this re-enact-
ment of a stage coach run, we
shall entertain thousands and
posthumously pay tribute to the
‘men who eyery day risked their
lives to carry supplies and mail.”

From Barkerville, now a ghost

town but once the high-living
scene of those magic words,
“gold sirike,” a stage coach
will roll over’ historic routes the
460-odd miles to Vancouver. It
will then be ferried to Nanaimo
and will rumble across Van-
conver Ipland to Victoria for a
colorful wind-up celebration.
» Shotgun guards and-all the
other trappings of the old mail
runs, as well as gun-toting out-
riders ill accompany the stage
on its long journey.

Mr, Wallace declined to say
how. big a cache would he on
beard the stage, but he did say
it would carry a very yaluable

mail packet containing greetings |;

from Lieut-Governor Frank
Ross, Prime Minister John
Diefenbaker and Premier W. A-
G. Bennett. The greetings are
to he delivered to mayors and
reeves at stops along the route:
Return greetings will he brought
back tq the Lieut-Governor for
the Victoria arrival ceremony.

[geal centennial committees
plan to get most of thetr towns
out to welcome the stage coach
and to haye some celebration in
honor of It.

Changes of horses, drivers and
possibly stage coaches will he
made along the route,

He scored the goyernment for
lack of action on the present

at least partial relief for har-

affected through a redyction in
