~ Farm Accidents {tne T TRIBUNE, WILLIAMS ‘LAKE, ae Bet August. ie [EDITORIALS Both Sides Were Missing ONSENSUS among those merchants attending the commission meeting last week appeared to be that mo recent move had: been made to form a retail merchants’ association. The opinion is at variance with the facts because it was early in March of this year that an organiza- tional meeting of the town merchants was advertised. At the time, some 12 merchants attended and decided’ to form such an association so that ‘‘ merchants could reach a common ground on which to form policies on credit, hours of closing and other matters,” A com- mitte was formed to attempt to individually canvass bulk of the merchants not present. This committee was_to call a second meeting when their task had been accomplished, but there the matter rested. Fact remains, however, that the organizational meeting was held, and that the majority of those signing the latest petition on store hours, as well as those objecting to the validity of the petition, were not among those present. We hope one of the outcomes of this latest dif- ference of opinion among the merchants will be the eventual formation of a strong association. This newspaper has consistently advocated such a move— mot out of any particular concern for the welfare of the merchants—but in the interests of John Public, the little man who keeps them in business. Sound Decision OUND move on the part of the Centennial Committee was the announced decision this week to call a public meeting to choose a local prs for the 1958 celebration. Whether the project had taken the form of a museum or a face-lifting job on the arena, without giving the public the opportunity of sharing the de- cision, would have inevitably resulted in engendering @ community spat. out of proportion to the original cause. ‘ 12l= We are assuming these proposed projects will be the only ones offered, but we have heard a suggestion of a health centre and one of a town swimming pool. Perhaps there are other ideas floating around. Once the decision has been reached, we can put the squabbling behind us and prepare for the part we are to play in the Centennial with the enthusiasm this celebration warrants. ATEST statsitics reveal that 13,000 accidental deaths to rural residents occur annually on United States farms. The nation’s economic loss from farm accidents alone is estimated by the National Safety Council at one and a half billion dollars or more. These human and economic tolls show that safety makes sense. Every farm person, young and old, can help reduce the accident rate by observing safe practices and avoid- ing unnecessary risks. They can eliminate farm hazards that strike with- out warning by keeping their machinery and equip- ment in good repair and always using safeguards; by eliminating fire and fall dangers; by driving their cars and tractors with caution; and by taking time to do their work efficiently and safely all the time. Death is not always the only tragic result of accidents. Living with misery and disability is too often the result of a needless accident. Safety makes sense in preventing falls, the lead- ing source of all injuries to farm residents and the killer of 2,000 farm people each year. Safety makes sense in preventing machinery and animal accidents, which always rank high as farm killers. Take safety seriously. Accept your responsibility to yourself, your family and to your neighbors by helping promote safe living at all times.
