Originally this piece of land, ‘which was privately owned, was purchased by the village at tha Tequest of the DOT. Subsequent- ly commissioners gave up any thought of operating the airport and this responsibility was ac- cepted by the department, with the proviso that the village turn the small tract of land over to the crown. The commission stat- ed a willingness to dispose of it, but at a price commensurate with their costs in the transac- tion — about $500. Monday night a reply from the DOT revealed that there were no funds available for the purchase of land and the de- partment asked for reconsider- ation. Larson had been confined to bed with illness for the last week or so and it appears that he was unable to get out when the fire commenced. How it started is not known but it was first seen at 6:15 am. by Wes Speed by which time it. had got such a hold that nothing could be done to save the man or the cabin.
