Sales* volume of the co-oper-
ative showed a drop last year
from the totals of 1954, Mr.
Chance stated in his report on
operation. A total of 34,159
head of cattle, 1,126 hogs and
7,887 sheep was sold for $4,-
313,485. Of this sales volume,

co-op’s field service.

Arena Society Shows Profitable

Operation For 1955-56 Season

Besides paying the annual interest rate on their

20-year bonds, a reduction

of old accounts amounting

to $3500 resulted from the 1955-56 operation of War
Memorial Arena, members of the society were told last
Friday at their annual meeting.

Operational revenué, including
donations, amounted to $10,-
022.85, Expenses of operation
totalled $6,935. 34. and after
payment on the old accounts and
the transfer of $1,005 for pay-
ment of annual bond interest, a
balance in, the operation account
of $1,523 was still shown. Total
cash balance, including sinking
fund, amounts to $3,845.97.

Still to be paid on old accounts
payable is $4,205.20, made up
of $1,681.40 owing to H. J.
Gardner & Sons Ltd., $823.80
to Cariboo Electric & Plumbing,
and a $2,700.00 bank loan. De-
benture bonds outstanding
amount to $20,100.00.

Two Selling Methods Hold

Attention of Cattlemen

Relative merits of rail grade and live weight
selling occupied a good part of the time of ranchers

annual meeting the B.C.

Live Stock Co-operative Association.

No decision was made by the
agency as an organization, but
concensus of the meeting seemed
to be that both methods had
their advantages.

If cattle shipments were large
and the stock well finished, it
was agreed that the shipper
usually benefitted from the rail
grade method of selling. It was
pointed out though that a rep-
resentative of the shipper should
follow the shipment through the
entire procedure of the sale.

By the same argument, it was
aereed that small lots or lots
with no uniformity of grade vesy
often brought less money to the
shipper than he might have re-
ceived by selling live weight.

Danger of the rail weight
method was seen as a tempta-
tion to some ranchers to by-pass
their own selling agency. It was
pointed out that if the co-op

One advantage the occasion-

exactly how he is finishing his

move to stimulate the demand
for our product, the B.C. Beef
Cattle Growers Association em-
barked on a promotional cam-
paign with the theme “Buy B.C.
Beef.” This resulted, he said, in
a definite improvement in beef
sales for some two months.

Among conditions contribut-
ing to the depressed beef mar-
ket Mr. Ghowen sai re
inerease of grain feeding on the

States cattle on the local market.

Booking of feed lot space last
fall was very light and our cus-
tom feeding business would have
been considerable reduced had
it not been for the early winter.
About 70% of the cattle which
had to be shipped were from
the Cariboo, with many mixed
lots and with quite a number
which were discounted for
weight when marketed. It was
not a good feeding year. Most of
the cattle were fed on a falling
market and the gains were lower
than average. Unusually heavy
rains during the winter were
blamed by the coast cattle feed-
ers for the lower weight gains;
