WITH IRENE Once upon a time I wrote a little story about two little girls and their mothers who took a trip to Quésnel. The two little girls didn't have a very big vocabulary, but their favor- ite expression on that trip was “‘do- do” which meant “I want to go to the bathroom”. The time consumed in reaching Quesnel that day must have hit an all-time record. The little girls have grown up a little bit, their vocabulary has grown with them, but other than that they sometimes do not 5 on have i mothers have a few more grey hairs though. One night last week Elaine and her friend Lind- sey deciden it nvould be a won- Ss derful idea if Lindsey stayed for supper. “Can she Mom, can she, can she Mom, can she?” “Can 1, Mommy, can I Mommy, can 1.Mom?” For some reason children seem to believe they can lower their parents” resistance by constant repetition. It usually works. And so Lindsey stayed for supper. But that was not all. Somehow they also evolved the wonderful idea of Lindsey sleeping here all night. “But”, I protested sorrowfully. “‘there’s no room. You just have one little bed, Elaine”. “Oh we could sleep in the back- bedroom where Grammy and Marcia Summer Play Coats Denims Shorts Pedal Pushers Children’s Summer Togs Halters Bathing Suits e SEE OUR Shorts DRASTIC REDUCTIONS In Ladies’ Better Suits, Dresses, Coats Summer Dresses Halters T Shirts T-Shirts Bargain Talles 50c— $1.00 — $2.00 — $3.00 Mackenzies Ltd. slept,” pleaded my little one. « we could sleep in the hack room, parrotted Lindsey. “I don’t think so, not tonight, maybe some other night”, I mumbl- ed casting about for a good logical reason. But the little angels were not to be dissuaded. Every ten minutes was besieged with “Why can’t Lind- sey sleep here?” ... and... “Phone my Daddy and tell him to bring my pyjamas”. Finally in desperation I phoned. Dodie. We held a big conference . . “They're awfully young. only four, to be starting to sleep out... I wonder what will happen if we do .... 1 probably be bringing Lindsey home about 1 o'clock in the morning - + Well, I'm willing to give ita trial...” And so it came to pass. And this is the blow by blow description. ot the event. 8:30 p.m. “I want this bed... no, that’s my bed . . . no, it’s mine, my Grammy slept here and I want it . okay, this one’s better anyhow . .. why, why is it better? ... 8:40 p.m. “I want the light on: ., no, turn it off... .I want the light on... well I can’t go to sleep with the light in my eyes... .” (Mommy will leave the light on out here, then you can see fine’’.) 8:50 p.m. After ten minutes of giggling and laughing. “Mommy, 1 need to go to the baffroom”’. (Elaine can’t pronounce her ‘“‘th’s’” very well). 9:00 p.m. “Mom, Lindsey needs to go to the haffroom.”” 9:10 p.m. “Mommy, you didn’t. kiss me goodnight. Now kiss Lindsey. 9:15 p.m. “Auntie Irene. can we have a cookie?” (giggles) 9:20 p.m. “We want a drink, Mom- my.” (giggles) GO TO SLEEP! 9:30 p.m. “I have to go to the bath- room, Auntie Irene”. 9:40 p.m. “Mommy I have to go to the bathroom.” 9:45 p.m. “I want my tractor in bed with me”, 9:50 p.m. “What are you doing, Mommy?” GO TO SLEEP! 9:55 p.m. “I’m sleeping here, aren't I Auntie Irene?” 10:00 p.m. “Let's play house in the morning, I'll he the Mommy and you be the baby... . No, I want to be the Mommy . . . No, I’m going to be the Mommy, you can be the Daddy ... I don’t want to... .” 10:20 p. m. “Is that my Daddy? Kiss me, Daddy. Now kiss Lindsey. Lindsey’s. sleeping here ALL NIGHT!” 10:30 p.m. “I need to go to the baft- room.” (“If you two don’t go to sleep, you'll both get a spanking.”) And so they finally went to sleep 6:30 am. “Wabhhh Wahhh.” 1 stumbled out ofbed, wonderifig what Ward was waking up so early for. And there they were, giggling and laughing. “We had to go to the baff- room. Mommy”. 6:40 a.m. “When are you going to get up, Mommy?” my”. And so I got up. 8:00 am. “I’m going to sleep here six more nights, Auntie Irene”, I shuddered slightly. ney Mr. and Mrs. Ted McClellan of Los Angeles are spending a few Weeks at their summer home at Likely.
