Still Major Health Problem In This Area, Report Indicates Chief cause of worry from a community health angle in this part of the Interior is the continued high incidence of venereal disease, according to the annual report of the Cariboo Health Unit. The unit, which serves six school districts, encompassing an area of 55,000 square miles and a popula- tion estimated at 35,900, is headed COMING! by Dr. H. M. Brown. Total number of venereal disease cases reported in this area last year was 456. On the general statistical field, the report points out that the total number of deaths due to accident and violence in the area dropped from G60 in 1952 to 51 last year. Home is not the safe place people think since a quarter of the deaths ioceurred there. Fifteen of these deaths occurred on the highway, 13 at home, 12 in industry and 11 in other public places. Total deaths in the area were 24¢ Major causes of death were heart disease 49, violent or accidental 51, cancer 36, diseases of early infancy 28, and apoplexy 24. The unit reports that its immun- ization program appears to have giv- en good results in that there were no eases of diphtheria, smallpox or tet- anus Eighty-five cases of whooping cough were reported but no deaths resulted. Infectious hepatitis and bacillary dysentery were reported in the same numbers as 153 but three deaths were attributed to the form- er. There was a sharp outbreak of mumps towards the end of the year. Only seven cases of poliomyelit were reported. There were no deaths from this disease. There was one case of typhoid fever, Infection in this case was at- tributed to drinking Water from an unprotected supply, no doubt con- taminated by a typhoid carrier. There were 37 cases of active tu- hberculosis either undergoing treat- ment in sanatoria or at home. There are a further 284 arrested or in- active cases in the area.
