and down Olivér ‘Street if the éase
gets a little ‘boring.

I was sitting In this favorite. spot
during one Gase, surrounded by about
twenty-five empty seats when aman
slipped into the seat beside me,
murmuring “Do-you mind if I sit
beside you?”

I eyed the 26 empty seats. but
answered tat I-didn’t mind in the
least. He was ‘about ten years older
than myself, I judged, and was
dressed in heavy shirt and work
pants. 3 Mee,

The case was droning on when
suddenly a voice said “My you’ve got
nice feet.” Startled I stared at the
man beside me-and then down at my
Teet. “You should’see mine,” he con-
tinued. Not wishing to do anything of
the kind, I smiled slightly and made
a obvious show ‘of listening intently
to the case.

Five minutes later came the’ re-
mark “Are you: married?” Now that
was a leading'quéstion, but in the
quiet of the court-room_I took the
easy way out ‘and merely nodded
“yes.” “Shucks,” he said. “all the
nice ones are.” %:

Well at this point there was no
denying that my ego had taken a
definite rise. It's alwaya encouraging
to know that you are not quite on
the shelf, that you are still attrac-
tive to men’. . . even an old cowhand.
But on the other hand, I was feel-
ing very uncomfortable and tried to
Squeeze a little farther into the
corner. :

A few minutes later he again
murmured ‘Mmmm, you sure have
got pretty feet.” I tucked them
under the chair, but not without the
amusing thought that it was the first
a time 1 had known anyone to go into

ecstacies over my feet. They were
clean and I had ten toes like every-
one else, and I could’t see anything
special about them. *

Another interval passed. “Got a
nice husband. “Yes, very nice,” I
answered. I began to wonder whe
was getting cross-examined. ‘That

‘wspaper work can be extremely
eresting . . . and it yery ‘often
icads to some odd experiences.

Several times I have covered
court cases when the editor had heen
too busy and have found it fascinat-
ing. It can be deadly dull too when
the hours slip by as the same testi-
mony is rehashed and rehashed, or
the laywers argue endlessly over
some technical point.

I find it annoying too for my tidy
mind likes all the tag ends cleared
up and tucked away, but often con-
Ty evidence is left unexplained.

I saw the famous Angelo Branca
in action once which was a marvel-
ous yet awesome scene to watch. I
saw him reduce an intelligent man

had seen or done, and I could
have wept for him.

I have had some funny experienc-
es too. If the courtroom is more or
less deserted as is often the case, I
usually pick the last seat in the last
