It is a matter of record that when the silage material is stored corsectly and the silo is properly con- structed, the surface silo is a prac- tical and economical storage struc- ture for silage. One of the advantages of the snr- face silo is its low initial cost. which may range from $1.50 to $2.00 for materials per ton of capacity. This will be lower still if the farmer uses his own lumber. On the other hand, the construction of tower silos may cost $12 or over per ton of e: When evaluating the comp costs of the two types of silos the period of useful life should be taken into account. A surface silo may be expected to last 15 to 20 years while -a.gowersilo_may have a_nseful lite of 30 years or more, depending on materials of construction. When building a silo the location should he. given first consideration, advises D. J. Cooper, Central Ex- perimental Farm, Ottawa. It should be as convenient as possible to the barn on a well drained: and accessible site for filling operations as well as tor feeding out. If self-feeding is to be practiced the base of the silo should be of concrete,’ tarvia, or crushed stone about 1% inch in size and anoula have tongue and groove ji Only in this way can air he ket out of silage. Sidewall posts may be spaced 6 feet apart and may be braced to stop any movement of the sidewall. A height of 6 feet is suggested for sidewalls as considerable difficulty is experi- enced in climbing a silo any higher than this. Packing of a silo can hest be done by a tractor, making sure to thor- oughly pack at the sidewall. The amount of packing required de- pends upon the maturity, moisture content and length of cut. Too se- vere packing of early maturity, high moisture, short cut silage, results in undesirable cold silage. On the other hand, too little packing of late ma- turity, low moisture, long silage, pro- duces overheating and mold form- ation.
