The new edict will have little effect as far as pas- senger cars are concerned for rear wheels on most models are well protected. However, trucks and trailers will be required to carry, the flaps. A con- siderable number of trucks, particu- larly transports already make use of such protection. The order is being put into effect in response to the requests of many individuals and organizations. The petitions point out the hazards fre- | quently created by the unprotected wheels of heavy vehicles. i e mes in & A — H. J. GARDNER & SONS Your Building Supply Dealer Countless G ors / Health Officer Reports On Vaccines By Dr. H. M. Brown, M.D., B.S., D.P.H, Director, Cariboo Health Unit We are all hoping that the large scale experiment with the new Salk poliomyelitis vaccine which has been conducted this year in the United States will have a successful result. The collected statistics from this ex- periment should be available in March of next year and a study of these will enable us to tell whether the vaccine is effective in preventing the disease. While poliomyelitis and its pre- vention has attracted much atten- tion from both medical men and the public in general, it should properly be borne in mind that there are other and far more deadly diseases against which we have known and proven methods of immunization. The parents of a new generation which has just grown up, have no first hand knowledge of the perils of diphtheria. This disease has been almost abolished by the’ immuniza- tion of babies and children, and we must not weary in making sure that nine tenths or so of all children are immunized, otherwise we may get further outbreaks in the future. Be- cause of the absence of the disease én our midst, a certain amount of apathy is very naturally engendered, An example of this is that in Van- derhoof last year only fifty-one per cent of the consent forms for immun- ization were returned from the par- ents to the public health nurse. Tetanus (Jockjaw) is not a com- mon cause of death; but tetanus spores are widespread, cuts are com- mon in childhood, and thousands of injections of anti-tetanus serum are given annually — at great cost and hometimes with unpleasant’ effects. The death of a child from tetanus is a shocking thing for the parents and the doctor, and treatment is often ineffective if the symptoms begin within a week of the injury.
