WITH IRENE My little brush with the law dur- ing Cattle Sale week turned out to be somewhat trivial, but at the time I sat with that funny feeling that only the sight of a uniformed cop bearing down upon you can bring. I was heading back to town from the Cattle Sale accompanied by Grace Rous of the Telephone office. The stretch of pavement alongside tho creek was bare except for the police car and one car they had already stopped. ‘I won- der what's hap- pened?” 1 said, my nose for new: starting to crin- kle. “I can't see any sign of an accident.” “Perhaps they are looking for people carrying guus without licenses,” I continued. “Or perhaps they think you migit have a stray bull in the trunk,” Grace chuckled. I pulled up. The uniform approach- . “Your driver's license, please, DRIVER LICENSE! “Heh, I grinned ingratiatingly, “1 guess it's at home in my purse. 1 should have a back pocket like you ;men.” My little joke raised no re- sponse in the young stern face look- ing in at me. 0 driver’s license eh?” he said, whipping ont hi: book with the blue name?” I debated telling him WHO I Was, but decided bravely that I would take my medicine quietly. He checked the headlights, the taillights, the brake light. At this point he said “The middle light is the brake light.” Not knowing iz this was a question or a statement, and not having a clue as to whether the brake light was in the middle, on the sides. or on the roof, I re- plied “If you say so.” Somehow I don’t think that was the right answer. “Present your license at the RCMP. office wthin two days,” he said hand- ing me a blue slip. Then he handed me the small gummed label which says “RCMP Checked” and instruct- ed me to paste it on the extreme right of the windshield. I promptly tried to put it on the extreme left. Then I was tree! My friends joked and kidded me about fines ranging up to $100, and it is probably an anticlimax to say that there was no fine when I pre- sented iy license. But those are the kind of anticlimaxes I ljke. I get the doggondest things in the mai}. This time it was a 4x8” well- scrubbed potato, accompanied by a letter from “the boys.” I sure would like to know who “the boys” are. Being it was a potato, I immediately cagily denies any knowledge of the matter. I dunno... a The letter say inking you may not have come into actual contaet with one of those things called Small Potatoes, we are sending you a little specimen that has just come our way. There are, of course, other sizes of potatoes such as medium, large, extra large and outsize. | “An outsize spud will adequately | provide seven men of the Paul Bun- yan type with murphys three times per day for eight days with sufficient leftovers to keep alive five cats and @ mongrel dog. Some day, when you and Clive have the good luck to pull a real fish out of your much vaunted Chimney Lake (and we don’t mean one like that fiddling thing you fillea a whole column raving about), we shall be pleased to hire a truck and send along a true specimen of the outsize potuck to compliment the repast. “P.S. This sample we are sending, like many others of its ilk, may prove to have a hiatus inside containing a yellow matter.” Just what the boys are trying to prove, I haven't a clue, but they can go on sending me potatoes through the mail as often as they like. The potato in question provided us with enough for a meal, and con- sidering the shortage and the con- templated rise in. price of the com- modity, I am not going to look a gift jhorse in the mouth. (Incidentally it had no hiatus inside. It was perfect.) So continue to send the potatoes, boys. You can't insult me that way. (By the way, I didn’t fill a whole column raving about my 2%4-pound fish. It was only part of a column, so there.) "i TEA SERVED TO 115 _ Annual Bazaar Successful A gross profit of over $600 was realized from the Annual Catholic Bazaar held October 16 in Columbus Hall. A large crowd attended and visited the many attractive tables featuring home cooking, needlework, candy, white elephant, fish pond and sale ot Christmas cards. Tea was served to approximately 115 guests. The home cooking brought in the largest profit. The early frosts made a noticeable drop in the plants and vegetables for sale.
