Dr. Wood, who is resident govern- ment veterinarian, said the branch was first established ‘in 1870, follow- ing an incident where a shipment of cattle was landed in Quebee and shipped overland to Vermont where it was found to be infected with the dread hoof and mouth disease. Ever since that date the branch has had the responsibility of protect- ing the livestock industry by test- ing shipments at ports of entry; stamping out diseases that originate here, and by ridding the country of diseases that have been established for years in the industry, such as Bang’s disease and tuberculosis. Oda twist to the ‘story of the branch is that although it was fear of hoof and mouth disease that led to its formation, enmployees of the department were not called on to fight an actual occurrence of the disease in this country until the out- break in Saskatchewan in 1952. Luck was with the banch in this instance though, Dr. Wood said. The fact that the outbreak occurred in a relatively sparsely settled area and was con- fined to two farms, helped officials in their effort to stamp it out with a minimum loss of livestock. BROUGHT BY IMMIGRANY It has been definitely established that the disease was brought to the farms by a German immigrant, either in his clothes or the food he brought with him. The manu was working on a German farm, in an area where the disease is prevalent, just prior to coming to Canada. He packed enough foodstuff in a large tin container to tide him over on his journey and set out for his farm destination in Saskatchewan. While he was working there he helped a neighbor load some livestock destined for a city abbatoir, and it was at this point that the disease was detected. Some time later, the first farmer recalled noticing that shortly after the arrival of the immigrant, his hogs had been sick for a period. This was diagnosed as a light case of the same disease, and the farmer fe “Manhattan Beauty Shop Margaret Blenkinsop Phone 15-R-4 ORDER YOUR NOW AGENTS FOR Whether a Phone 97 Winter Feed Requirements from Interior Wholesale Distributors McCABE GRAIN CO., LTD. - We now handle a complete line of VICTORIA BRAND Feeds for Cattle, Hogs and Poultry --- in mash or pellets sack, or a carload we shall be pleased to serve you For Pellets — Grains — Mashes INTERIOR WHOLESALE DISTRIBUTORS membered that scraps from the trav- ellers lunch kit had been tossed to the animals. To try and control similar in- stances, the branch checks the ef- fects of all immigrants for any pos- sible livestock disease. Bulk of his own work in the dis- trict is carrying out TB tests among he herds, Dr. Wood explained. He said that about two-thirds of the cat- tle population had been tested in the three years since he came to the area, and as the tests must be carried out every six years, it looked as though he would just finish in time to start all over again. The speaker was introduced by Clive Stangoe and thanked by George Smith. He told afterwards that he had heard of fa man looking like a deer to some trigger-happy hunter, but for him- self to be taken for a goose was more than his vanity cold stand. Some- lone fired across a meadow and filled him so full of buckshot, he had to |go to the hospital. He is not com- plaining, however, as the shot drove the geese his way and he got three of them. Honeymooners Have Strange Experience Writing to the Kohnke family, with whom she and her husband spent their honeymoon recently, Mrs. Al- ired Knull (Myrtle Pennington, Van- couver newspaper staffer) related the following unusual wind-up to their Cariboo trip. Mr, and Mrs. Knull had just been home a couple of days when their dreams were shattered of a Sunday morning (1:30 a.m.) by a hysterical girl in their bedroom, babbling a garbled story of her experiences. Seems the girl, a recent newcomer from England, had answered a “‘lone- ly hearts’ advertisement and after writing several letters to an equally lonely man, had consented to a date. The pleasant evening turned into a nightmare for the girl though when the man drove her in his yesidential district and then to get fresh. When the girl resisted he slapped her and then grabbed her by the throat, not letting her go until she agreed to go to an auto court with him. When he started to drive off she managed to open the car door and jump, running into the closest house for help. It happened “to be the newlyweds’ home. and the cou ple calmed the girl and saw that s’ got safely home.
