X-ray Has New Use In Helping Pork Production They are X-raying pigs at Lacombe Experimental Station, Alberta, and no doubt people will wonder why! It is an interesting story and this is how the research men explain the project. At the present time in order to get a picture of the genetic possibilities of a litter of pigs it is necessary to take a representative group from the litter, generally four pigs, two bar- rows and two gilts selected at ran- dom and subject them to a feeding test which culminates in slaughter- ing the pigs This test gives a record of the group rate of gain, feed effici- ency, and carcass quality and to- gether with litter size and weaning weight can be used as a basis of sel- ection. Selection, of course, is the basis of improvement. The pigs from the best performing litters must be selected as breeding stock to produce each succeeding generation. All of these records, with the ex- ception of carcass quality, can be ob- tained without slaugitering any pigs. However, carcass quality is possibly the most important record of all. It we are to produce a higher percent- age of lean bacon hogs we must select for and improve this characterstic. If we could evaluate accurately the carcass quality of a pig without hav- ing to slaughter,, we would have a much greater number of pigs to sel- ect from-and consequently be able to make q ‘better and faster improve- ment. - Hence, the experimental work in X-raying pigs at Lacombe. A research project is underway to ascertain whether the bacon quality or potenti- ality of a pig can be determined with- out slaughtering it, by using X-ray. Techniques will have to be developed and studies made of the relationship of the relative fat and lean measured through X-ray equiment, and the fat and lean as determined by cutting the carcass. This will be done with a large number of pigs at different stages of growth. If a close relation- ship can be established and the best stage of growth at which to X-ray determined, then a simple measure of the length of the live pig along with the relative fat and lean from an X-ray should give a good estimate of it bacon quality or potential. With this information, the best pigs in carcass quality could be se- tected as breeding stock from ths best litters from the standpoint of litter size, weaning weight, rate of growth, and ieed efficiency. These are the factors which determine economy of production. This phase of the work has just started at Lacombe, says J. G. Stoth- art, senior animal husbandman at the station. It will take some time to appraise all the possibilities. It is another example of research, how- ever, which may contribute import- antly in the development of genetic- ally better breeding stock — hetter from the standpoint of overall econ- omy of production. Consumer Price Index Lower Ottawa— The Bureau of Statisties reports that the consumer price in- dex was one-fifth of a point lower in August at 116.8 compared with 117 in July. The decline cracked-a steady three-months advance in the cost-of- living yardstick. The drop in the index, which is based on 1949 prices equalling 100, was caused mainly by a decline in some food prices. This decline more | than outweighed the continuing up-| ward drive in rents and home-owner- ship costs, B.C.
