Pages. oS THE TRIBUNE, WILLIAMS LAKE, B.C. Thursday. August 12, 1954, New Mile House Scene Of Dinner For Pioneer Lady Mrs. George Forbes, who with her late husband operated the 122 Mile House in the early days, was guest of honour at a dinner held in the new lodge at the old homesite on Lae La Hache, cn August 6. : The old stopping place, which in Pioneer days, was hostel to the freight team and stage coach and jater to the automobile, is gone. It was forced-to make way for the new highway. Mrs. Forbes, who is in her 94th year, is not one to reminisce and pine for “the good old days.” She has ad- vanced with the times and the new 122 Mile House with its modern and excellent accommodation, is to her just a continuance of what she and Manhattan Beauty Shop Margaret Blenkinsop Phone 15-R-4 her husband started at the turn of the century. Mrs. Forbes was accompanied to Lae La Hache hy her son and daugh- ter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Gordon Forbes from Grimshaw, Alberta. The dinner guests included “Mr. and Mrs. Gordon Forbes, Mr. and Mrs. Gilbert Forbes and daughter Elizabeth, Mr. W. EB. Walkden and Mr. B. C. Daugherty of Vancouver. After spending two days at the 122 Mile House and renewing acquaint- ances with old friends in the Lac La Hache valley, Mrs. Forbes returned to Brunson Lake, where she makes her home with a daughter, Mrs. B. WITH IRENE Many people have enquired as to how the battle for names for “baby brudder” is coming out, whether it is Ward or Ian. So far it is still not definitely settled and the poor little like is over two months. A friend made the humorous remark that he will probably grow up with a split personality! 4 But I think “Ward” hag a slight edge. Grandmother Ward is really in there rooting for the family name as this is her first grandson... A cousins writes from England that it is such a grand name; nat- urally her maiden name was Ward. And Elaine in- forms everyone that Ward is baby brother’s name. * So00000, it looks like it is more or less settled. It he gets ‘‘Wardie” when he gets older, I'll seream. The editor's first.attempt at feed- ing the latest addition during the night was marked with humor. In the morning I found wads of cotton bat- ten in the waste hin and enquired the reason. It seems that he had left Ward uncovered tor a moment, and then had to mop him up from the top of his head to his waist. “I forgot we had a different model this time,” he said. Me had evidently lost his knack of flushing a diaper too. He fumbled, and even though he plunged his arm halfway down the drain, all was Jost and the diaper was seen no more. Writing of babies reminds me of baby-sitting which in turn reminds me of a visitor from California tell- ing me that her daughter paid $1.00 an hour for a haby-sitter down there. It usually costs them about $6.00 just to attend a movie, she said, Ancther reason to thank our lucky stars we are living in Williams Lake. Not much use living close to all those glamorous night clubs, theatres and restaurants, and not be able to afford a baby-sitter to go. I'd like to know why some new mothers are inundated with—titera- ture from baby food companies, cei= set'companies and the like, while others receive nothing. When Elaine was born, not a smidgin of free offers of cereal, baby foods, and baby spoons. Where did they obtain her name, and why didnt they get mine too?? This time I have received an offer of a free hox of cereal from one com- pany, but that is all. Does anyone know the reason? Although I enjoyed the time that I worked in the office, my days were further complicated by the fact that Elaine spent little time upstairs with | Mrs. Goffin, and even less playing in “BEAUTY Is, RESTFUL | Healthful rest comes naturally in surroundings of comfort and beauty, B-H “Fresco-Tone” is J €asy to apply, dries quickly, is. odourless, And its pastel colours really bring cheerful’ restfulness. Lake Hardware Ltd: the yard. She wanted to he with Mummie and Daddy in the offic Her favorite sport was removing all the cash from the drawer, and filling her pockets. This necessitated looking for Elaine whenever a cus- tomer hove into sight, if she hadn't already generously doled most of it out to the men in the back shop. A friend who took her off my hands one day, phoned later to say she had fortunately found $6.85 in her poc- kets before it had been lost forever. Naturaly the cash book did not balance for several weeks Other favorite sports were pulling the ribbons out of the typewriters, strewing hundreds of paper clips on the fldor, stamping all available papers with “Paid,” pulling the scotch tape off the roll, and of course etting liberally smeared with print- e’s ink. Topping everything though was her perfect timing and embar- rassing insistence in wanting to go to the bathroom when I was busy with a customer. Many people, as they tripped over kiddie-cars and assorted toys, must have wondered what kind of an office they were coming into. The difference in children’s na- tures and personalities is a source of wonderment. A friend’s little girl plays with her dolls constantly and wheels them around in her buggy. Our gal rarely looks at her dolls, and her baby buggy was filled with beer and pop bottles the other day. She probably has a mercenary streak ané figures on going into opposition with Huston’s and Interior Whole- sale... He knows it pays to show consideration for his party-line neighbours. You'll find it pays, too. And it’s really so easy! When you’re using the phone and your party line wants to make a call, finish your call as quickly 2s possible, and in the same way, when you pick up the receiver and discover someone on the line, hang up gently and wait a few minutes before trying again. You'll find your party-line neighbours will return these courtesies, and service will be smoother. Most important of all, keep your calls short.
