BIG CREEK NEWS. RANCHERS TAKE ON AS HAYING SEASON The last of the Big Creek haying wound up this week. With a sigh of relief the rancher has put aside pitch- fork and halehook, to pick up (while mopping his brow), binoculars and rifle as he grinds into high gear again in the capacity of big game guide. There are horses to hunt and shoe; gear and provisions to collect. and pack, and then they're off -— to camp and hunt through the pine covered hills, the swamps and val- leys or the rocky snow-capped moun- tains beyond. Duane and Frank Witte start off with a large party of hunters and fishermen, who will split up to hunt from 8-Mile Meadow and Kloa Klut Lake. Assistant guides are Duncan Emmett, Jack Elkins and Howie George. Bruce Watt is cook. Hoping for goat, bear and sheep, Cecil Henry left Friday for the high hills, with two couples from Miami, Florida and assistants Don Warde and Johnnie Quilt. From Church’s ranch, seven men from California leave Sunday to hunt with Dick and Johnnie Church, Jim Bonner, Louis Quilt and Tony Myres. John Lyon is cook. Tom Wil- son and Bill Maxted go out Sunday too, with a party of four mouse hunters, GUIDING JOBS WINDS UP {| ANDY PINTER and JACK HUGO ,arrived this week from Penticton to jassist Mark Hugo, who is busy at Mons Lake. MRS. DUANE WITTE is driving |the mail this Saturday in her hus- jband’s absence. On every ranca the women-folk take on extra work, through haying and hunting —-! extra cooking, extra cleaning, extra beds to make. DURING the warm days last week the-waters of Big Creek rose notice- ably, turning a purplish taupe col- or, This is a sign of hot weather in the mountains, for that peculiar color means glacier water, tinted with rock dust, which comes from a big reservoir of ice above Lorna Lake. A rare thing to see this far down, Cecil Henry claims that this big glacier is getting smaller every year, probably due to lighter snow falls. Dick Church supports this. claim, adding that 20 years ago many ol the glaciers were four times as big as they are today. CHARLIE BAMBRICK was rush- ed to Williams Lake hospital Friday morning suffering from what appear- ed to be an attack of rheumatic fever. BILL.TRETHEWEY of Abbots- ford with two friends spent a few days at Breckness Ranch bird hunt- ing this week. Phyllis Watt accom- panied_her brother to the coast tor 2 short holiday when he returned Saturday. MARY HUTCHINSON is staying for a while with her sister, Mrs. ‘Tom Wilson, haying returned from Red- stone where she was employed through the summer by Mrs. J. Bliss. VISITORS at the Circle A ranch last Sunday were Mr. and Mrs. Gro- ver Hance of Hanceville and Tommy Dignan of Victoria. The latter is a second cousin of their hostess)Mrs Frank Witte. MR. and MRS. FRANK BERRY and small son have been staying over at Church’s for the past few days while locating a permanent position. Mr. and Mrs. Berry had been employed by Mr. Bayliff of Redstone since coming to Canada from France last April. HAZEL HENRY has been respon- sible for the Big Creek news for the past two weeks. She found so inuch to write that I am forced to make a greater effort than usual trying to keep up to her. RUBBER STAMPS SCRATCH PADS THE TRIBUNE NOW!
