Cattlemen Fear ‘Dumping’
Of Frozen Meat Stocks ©

Cattlemen are alarmed byt the fact that there are 8,000,000

rumour says may be dumped on the market at the beginning

Terry Mart Dies
Suddenly in North

No word has been received yet of
the cause of death of Thomas Terry
Mart, 20-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs,
Thomas Mart of Williams Lake, who
died suddenly at Whitehorse, ‘Y.T.,
where he has been working for-the
past year.

Word of the young man’s sudden
passing was forwarded to his parents
while they were on a vacation trip
to Saskatchewan. Mr. and Mrs. Mart!
had’ just arrived at the home ofthe
latter’s sister at Holbein, Sask., when
a message was received from the
police at Whitehorse. 2

An inquest will be held concern-
ing the death, but Mr. and Mrs. Mart
have not received any information
on the particulars of the tragedy.

Terry Mart was born in Williams
Lake January 21, 1933 and spent all
his life here. He was a popular young-
ster with his school companions and
older people alike, and will be i

Because of this high export figure |
to the United States, it is that coun-
try’s market that is watched most
7elosely. And hefe is good reason for’
gloom, since lumber on the U.S.
market has dropped $14 a thousand
from the year’s peak.

In Williams Lake, the largest pur-
chaser of rough lumber is Lignum’s,
and this company dropped the price
to producers another $1 a thousand
last Tuesday. Lignum’s is now pay-
ing $89 a thousand (the general
price) for 2-inch planer stock, No,
2-grade and better, down from the
year’s high of $43.

But a mill can’t produce only 24
and better stock. These mills =
averaging 10 to 15 percent No.
grade in their production, en
brings their gross income down to
around $35 a thousand.

What does it cost to produce
lumber? Here are figures taken from
careful costing of a representative
