We have a steady flow of week
newspapers pour into the office
each week, which we call “exchang-
es.” We send them our paper, and in
turn they send their paper to us,

They are a source of many valu-
able ideas, and often provide aadi-
tional news of local interest for us:
particularly thove papers near <our
own district such as Quesnel, Prince
George, Lillooet, Ashcroft and Kam-
loops. =

I am always intrigued to find. out
what other small-town’ columnists
are using for grist for their respec-
tive corners, and to wonder if they
find writing as difficult as I do. Clive
often finds edit-
orial ideas when
his own sugges-
tion box is at
low ebb.

The nearest
weekly news-
paper, and
therefore the one
in which we are
Most interested,
is the Cariboo
Observer at Quesnel. In the ‘last
week’s issue, I notice that a son was
born to Mr. and Mrs. Frank Sieven-
son on August 6th. They! were form-
er residents of Williams Lake; Mrs.
Stevenson being the Public Health
Nurse for a time. And I was amused
by a short story from the same pa-
per headlined “Vancouver Man
Stuck on Town.” The tor got stuck
in the local theatre — with bubble
gum, and was unable to leave at the
end of the feature

To the south of us-is the Bridge
River-Lillooet News, and I usually
glance at the column entitled “Hor
Women Only” which I believe is
written by the editor's wife. She
writes of homey little topics such as
their two dogs and cat, interspersed
with comments on local affairs, and
ending with a good recipe that she
has tried. ~

I like to glance over the items in
“Do You Remember” in the Ash-
croft Journal. Years ago, this paper
was the only one serving the south
Cariboo, and their files go back a
good many years beyond those of
the Tribune which was founded in

holds a special interest for us, be-
ing published by Cam and Lillian
Hooper (nee Plante), former res!

ton with a good newspaper

A little farther afield is the Kam-

loops Sentinel which publishes
| uwice weekly, and carries a pre-
dominance of national news in order
|to compete with Vancouver dailies.
Our ego is often inflated unbearably
when they reprint one of Clive’s
editorials. #

To the north, the Prince George
Citizen, anocher twice-weekly news-
paper, has a member of its staff who
writes a column ‘‘Perambulant
Penman" which is a source of con-
stant amusement, and envy on my
part. Why can’t I write like that, or
think up subjects like that, I won-
der?

The Alaska Highway News al-
ways reminds me of its publisher,
the 60-year-old redoubtable Margar-
et Murray, and her unflagging en-
ergy. Not to mention her editor and
daughter, Georgina Keddel. Mrs.
Keddell found time. recently to write
a nice letter comméhding me on this
column, when she herself writes

up. And of unfailing interest for us,’

friend, Connie Barber. _

The pile of exchanges seems in-
exhaustible: ‘The Revelstoke Re-|
view, The Campbell River Courier,
the Abbotsford - Sumas - Matsqui
News, The Comox and District Free
Press. Not to mention all the ones’
with whom we do not exchange.

I believe there are over 60 weekly
newspapers in British Columbia.
