In New West- minster, the only group-J belonged to was a lodge which was more-or- less of a family affair. With both my and father mother being life-long members, it was a foregone conclu- sion that I should become involved in nigh potentates and secret pass- words too. S Iam not counting the South Burn- aby United Church sewing club whicn was disbanded many years ago. Far from being an organization, it was ni an excuse for a cozy little chitehat among a group of girls every two weeks. We made an effort every year of course, and staged a bazaar and even managed to raise enough money to buy some paint or a new chair for the manse. But mainly we had a nice little sociable evening discussing the weather, our neighbors, fashions and men; and anything more serious was promptly squashed. We had only been hére a tew weeks when I was asked to join both the Legion Auxiliary and the Hos- pital Aux! ry. This threw me into somewhat of a tizzy. Being extreme- ly busy trying to sort myself out in the newspaper business and do a bit of housework on the sidé, I felt I had little time for organizations. But the editor soon straightened me out, and pointed out that attending meet- ings was:part of the newspaper bust: ness. I didn’t realize either at that time just how many organizations there were in Williams Lake, and how in- evitable it ¥ that I should become involved in some of them. The Hospital Aw ‘y and I just don’t seem to have hit it off. I re- alized when I first joined that it would be difficult to attend their Thursday afternoon meetings as that was our publishing day. And so it turned out that instead of sipping iea, I was folding papers-and getting ink-smeared. I believe I attended one meeting that first year, then. grace- fully dropped from the roll call. Since Blaine’s advent and my semi- retirement .to the apartment up- s, my Thursday afternoons in- volve nothing more pressing than go- ing shopping — so I joined the Hos pital Auxiliary again Jast the line I became a member. Ninety nine per cent of the members are teachers or mothers with school ehil- dren and the other 1% is me. And somewhere along the line I made the mistake of volunteering for a nomin- ating committee. It sounded like an easy job, but it has one drawhack. If you have difficulty filling the po- sitions, somehow or other the nomin- ing committee gets left with them. the P-TA. Those are my regular organiza- tions — ladies groups, you called for the same night. The editor takes the important one, and I attend Smiles “Say, Pat... what's this I'm hear- ing about ye joining up with thim communists? Be ye daft, man?” “It’s the truth, Mike .. . I attended the Board of Trade once — a lone woman among about thirty men. It happened to be an interesting meeting too, with Rod Mackenzie in fine fettle and needling all and sundry. I have been to a couple of Village Commissioners’ meetings too, but Clive is very welcome to attend them regularly. The business of running the town should be very engrossing, T suppose, but as a steady monoton-| ous diet I'm sure it would drive me mad. Somehow or other, I seem to have Acquired the Historical meetings as one of my pet jobs, but 1 can’t say that I find them boring. On the con- trary, I am intrigued with the past history of the Cariboo, and commend the attempts of the local group to preserve it. The editor even delegated me to attend a couple of political meetings last year when it was impossible for him to be in two places at once. My “know-how?” in this fleld is practically nil and I am liable to come away convinced that it is the only platform worth while - until I hear the next speaker. It is inevitable that I have acquir- ed a certain amount of confidence over the years in attending meetings. I no longer slink into the room and slide into a back seat. I no longer break out in a cold sweat at the thought of accurately transcribing my notes, and my heart retains a quiet even beat as I calmly write down facts and figures.
